I would think Mr Dunbar is your man to tutor you in the art of tasting the hard stuff Harry, but somehow I don’t think you need much tutoring.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
As you say not a lot of tuition required to sample the malts, it’s the remaining
in the upright position when you’ve had a few can be the problem.
thanks harry, long retired.

Get some unknotted rope and tie yourself to an upright wooden support Harry.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Could do a trip or two on trawler and get my sea legs back, if you can remain
upright in a bit of heavy weather aboard one of them a drink or two too many
wouldn’t knock you legless when on dry land.
thanks harry, long retired.

That’s a bit drastic Harry.I’m sure you don’t need to go to those lengths, just go along to the local funfair and have a few trips on the waltzer.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dave, funfair rides are a no no as far as I’m concerned, never, even as a
young fellah’ did I have any interest in fairgrounds I’m not scared of the
rides I just think they’re a waste of money, I’d be a bit like the old guy
who comes off the big dipper in the tele ad asking his wife “what sort of
cheese was that”.
thanks harry, long retired.

I’m the same Harry.I used to enjoy going to the fair years ago, liked the atmosphere, but never spent much.Used to win a coconut on the darts and have a couple of hot-dogs and watched the other daft gits wasting their money.
Cheers Dave.

Well it looks like the Hoppings on the Town Moor Has been cancelled, They say that is the end of it, I used to like it as a boy because my old Grandad knew most of the big Showman Oufits, from the days when they had Steam Traction Engines plus I got a lot of free rides, but of course the prices have gone sky high, Regards Larry.

hiya,
Larry, the Hoppings will be a big miss by a lot of people have seen it set up many
times when passing on the old Great North Road but it always seemed to be a
wellie job and what a mess after they’d pulled off although it never took long to
get back to looking half decent, a lot of money will be lost by the showmen if they
can’t find an alternative site, wasn’t they thinking about a site in Sunderland ■■.

hiya,
Very nice tidy Big “J” a decent motor in it’s day I quite liked driving them and it
would be a 220 ■■■■■■■ in there so it would bob on a bit, I’ve driven both the
Roller engined job as well as the ■■■■■■■ both doing the job without having too
much downtime,
thanks harry, long retired.

Llanelly Steel had a Big J with the ■■■■■■■ 220,which was based at the yard of the firm I last drove for.At the time Harry,it was considered a powerful motor.Different day and age.Now four wheelers have more power than that on tap.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
When you think back at the weights that we moved with a lot less poke than a
220 ■■■■■■■■ I’m talking 150 Gardners but it was the gearing that did the job,
some canny old lumps been moved with those old Gardners , but very slowly.

A different way of life then Harry. No speed limiters and not so many motorways with less legislation to put up with, also all the health & safety nonsense. There is more time wasted these days because of this stuff,so they need more power to make time up whilst on the road.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
I followed a Scania for a little while last night I was on the motorway and leaving
at the next exit he was doing 54 MPH all that power and only that speed it would
need to have automatic pilot if I was driving it, I would be asleep.
thanks harry, long retired.

The only time they need that power Harry,is on the hills or on the motorways with a bit of gradient.Anything up to 700+bhp and limited to 56mph ridiculous.
Cheers Dave.

My last wagon was limited to 52 mph Harry and that was painfull at times, especially running in convoy with workmates who could do 56! The lorry that I had before that was unlimited but the tacho ran 10 mph fast following a gearbox change so I had to stick at 50 maximum or the Police might not have seen the funny side.

Pete.

hiya,
I’m afraid If I was limited to that speed it would be a case of me looking for
something different to do, doing that speed when the motor is capable of
flying if unlimited, it would be a case of pull the fuse and fly.
thanks harry, long retired.

hiya,
Definitely too slow I was tramping about twenty odd ago with an old Roller
engine Seddon which would do over seventy and did so regularly, although
in the late fifties I did my share of creeping about with pre-historic motors
as did everybody else in those days, it’s a dangerous speed to me I would
tend to lose concentration running at today’s limited speed a bit of passing
of other vehicles tends to keep you alert.
thanks harry, long retired.

Hi Harry,
The Bedford KM that I drove for C M Philpotts would do over 70,also one or two others I drove would push on with two speed axles.I don’t think these days at 44 ton gross they should go above 60mph which should be plenty fast enough.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Dave I’ve often wondered why they set the limiters at a speed which is usually
lower than the motorway allowed speed limit for heavy vehicles, it is still 60
isn’t it ■■ that can’t be economical can it ■■.
thanks harry, long retired.

Yes 60 for lorries on the motorway Harry, yet the limiters are set at 56mph.Some are well over that because I have a job to catch them at 70mph with my van.
Cheers Dave.
