0I often wonder where these fine AECs Ended up, ■■? Regards Larry.

hiya,
In my opinion Larry these old girls wouldn’t look out of place in a line-up
of todays “modern stuff” and I bet there’s loads in agreement.
thanks harry, long retired.

Well if anybody offered me the choice, an all singing all dancing modern Euro cabbed job (any one of them? Scania, Volvo. Daf, Merc) OR a Mk 5 AEC, I’ll take the AEC EVERY time.

hiya,
Dennis happy new year to you and your Good Lady, I mainly stayed out Hampstead
way and also at Islington (not Brays) it would be in my very early days that I was in
the Aldgate area for overnighting it was never very good for digs down that way I
wasn’t any good at cabbing it, never carried any gear to make the cab comfortable I
liked to get parked and get away from the motor and had a good variety of digs all
over the UK so wherever I was heading my bed was always booked, bit of a boring
old git’ eh’ just got into that way working for the “red and rusters” and stuck with it.
thanks harry, long retired.

I was only a young lad at the time and was easily led astray by my “worldly wise” superiors, but I didn’t half enjoy the experience!!!,it’s all part of growing up and I had to,fast !! Cheers Dennis.

Hiya “H”,well us poor free enterprize hauliers/drivers couldn’t afford to stay in “upmarket” areas like Hampstead !!! When I was at Bradys we stopped at Silvertown when we down the “Smoke” then when I started on my own the traffic I carried was more up Aldgate way and also a lot of my backloads were around Tower Bridge way.I stopped in Tooley St. a few times when I was tipping at Sainsburys Stamford St.Then at Brays in Aldgate a bit until I came across a little dig in Aldgate that was owned by a Greek Cypriot,he had a Kebab restaurant on the ground floor and the digs were above, his wife kept everything immaculate and we didn’t have to have a kebab for breakfast either !! Full English only, and tasty !!I can’t just recall how much they charged but it was similar to Brays and 100% better !! Regarding dossing in the cab “H” that is something I never did,if I was in the cab I was behind the wheel driving! Mind you I did do a lot of er! “outside hours” nocternal driving and if I felt a bit drowsy I could pull up and give it 30 minutes of Zzzzz’s,wake up and keep going,my internal alarm clock never allowed me anymore than half an hour!As I served my time with a “Master” on the 8 wheeler and trailer I was taught the right way and kipping in the cab was taboo, and apart from those London digs,Brays and Tooley St.I stayed in some of the finest digs to be had by drivers,up and down the UK.I could never understand why anybody would want to kip in a non sleeper cab,and sleeper cabs came along after I’d given up driving but I still didn’t fancy kipping in the cab even then.Happy days “H” keep your elbows in old Pal!!Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
Yes Dennis good digs was a must, I’m no angel though and have done a spot
of day and nighting sometimes by choice sometime’s by request and been well
payed by a private haulier for doing a “favour” but getting back to the driving
a cab cowboys motor, I have on occasion had to do this ie’ my own motor for a
repair or MOT but used to dump the “minging” sleeping gear in the sheet store
I’ve had to tranship some stinky gear from cab to store’s on more than one occ-
asion, trying to get a proper nights kip among that pile of rubbish was beyond
me, I always found the ex’s sufficient to cover a bed and food, was your health
more important than the few bob gained by “kipping oer’t engine”, not for me.

This talk of Brays in Islington has made me feel quite ill. God they weren’t so happy days then, I don’t know why I used the place. :frowning:

hiya,
I used to dig quite near to Brays it was well used by Suttons night trunkers,
you had to be up bright and early to let the night men get to bed I stayed
only once the beds where double shifted, I was actually in my regular digs
just round the corner when the place burned down, best end to it, I can’t
remember exactly but I don’t think anyone got hurt which was a miracle
talk about sardines, that and the so called Silvertown transmotel what a
cheek a right pair of dosshouses, yes Silvertown was also a one-nighter.
thanks harry, long retired.
