Hi rdun,
Have a good holiday.Quite nice in Llandudno when we called there one afternoon in August this year.I wouldn’t have thought you would get a lot of frost with the sea air…unless you live on top of the Great Orme.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Thanks Mike remember him well, not in person but careerwise,
a pal of mine (a lightweight) fought on the same bill as him on
a couple of occasions many years ago.

His brother was a good boxer.Sugar Ray Robinson, women, and drink stopped. Him from being great.

hiya,
Norm, my old mate, the only connection between Randolph Turpin and Sugar Ray Robinson was their careers ran along at the same time Turpin was a British born fighter Sugar Ray was born and passed away in Los Angeles, or am I wrong??.
thanks harry, long retired.

Randolph Turpin beat Sugar Ray Robinson for the world middleweight title in 1951,then lost to him on a TKO four months later.
On 17 May 1966 he was found dead in his home Gwen’s Transport Cafe in Leamington Spa where he lived with his wife and four daughters, one of his daughters, Carmen aged 4, was taken to hospital in Birmingham with two shot wounds.
If I remember rightly a nephew of his Jackie Turpin was a boxer in later years.
Cheers Dave.

Hi Harry, as it sounds a bit like Turpin time maybe Norm has been tasting it or he is getting mixed up with one of his old pin ups, Betty.

Member 69.

What I said was true! His. Elder brother was a boxer and was. In his corner,I do believe his name was ■■■■ and had bouts at drill hall Northampton . Sugar Ray did lose in London because he never took his opponent,as a danger but he did the next time and Turpin never layed a glove on him. As I said. Night clubs. Drink and women shortened his boxing career and like Freddy
Mills mixing with gangsters was bad for their. Health.

■■■■ Turpin was just as famous for holding up stagecoaches wit his trusty steed Black Bess.
Cheers Dave.

betty driver (turpin) wasn’t the cheery soul she portrayed . before the days of corrie she kept a pub in whaley bridge , ironically called the ■■■■ hotel , it was the ■■■■ inn before she renamed it . opposite said pub was phil’s transport cafe and there was space to park outside the pub ( there was only room for 7 or 8 in the cafe park ). it didn’t matter what day of the week it was , if you parked on "her " side of the road she would be out shouting about there being a delivery due any minute and they needed the space , the language was what you would expect in a dockers canteen . phil always said " take no notice , her delivery is at 10am every saturday " good old days " ? cheers , dave

hiya,
Dave, I’ve worked for a couple of haulage contractors in my time who
I would liken to ■■■■ Turpin but fortunately I did’nt need to stay long,
and they didn’t have the decency to wear a mask.

Thats true Harry about the hauliers, some would rob you blind and then wonder why they couldn’t recruit drivers.
Cheers Dave.

hiya,
Yes Dave one I remember I’ll only refer him to by his first name (Robert)
had the audacity to be referred to as ROB by his wife and a long serving
“idiot” driver who alway’s got the pride of the fleet, I referred to him by
another name, but not repeatable on here.

Unfortunatily Harry, there are still a few like that chap still around, but the word goes out and they end up wondering why their wagons are knackered. They can’t see that its the amount of different drivers on their lorries. :imp:
Some of them never learn.
Cheers Dave.
