The Great Blind Spot Debate - T&D needs your ranting!

just to echo the thrust of most comments, there are a number of ways we can reduce the risk of cyclist fatalities - and not just relying on a HGV fix.

Cyclists need to improve their understanding of ‘cooperative use of the road’; Drivers need to be better aware of the vulnerabilities of cyclists; and manufacturers need to produce better designed mirrors etc to reduce blind spots.

As for 'cooperation when judges are interpreting rule 221 of the highway code as moving right to turn left gives cyclists a justifiable ‘sense of security’ to undertake :open_mouth: :unamused: who needs ‘cooperation’ from cyclists.

That’s my point though mate - Cyclists need to understand that their’s is not the only right to ‘proceed’. So they need to co-operate, by understanding more about what’s going on around them.

Common sense seems to be a forgotton skill by many road users these days. Who hasn’t seen other road users carrying out stupid and dangerous manoeuvres simply because it suits them…? Making progress, usually to the morgue.

And without wishing to start an immigration debate, how much are the issues we see daily on our roads caused by people who gained their licence in another country, with different standards of driving; and cyclists from other countries where cycling is far more protected and promoted than it is here…?

here is another thought on construction vehicles and blind spots. If they were that bad there would be damage all over the building site and trucks would be damaged and expensive work done to fix them, mine is set up to see right along both sides so that I can avoid high kerbs and cement tubs ect.

Earthline’ve just put some 16 plate Scanias on the road with the bottom passenger door window. I’ve seen other 16 plate tippers without the added window, so is this just to keep the FORS cash cows happy?
