The future of trucking

joe royal:

OVLOV JAY:
Like the article says, there has to be a driver there to take over when the inevitable happens. And a machine can’t fill out an accident form lol. Can’t see how you can relax if you need to be able to take over at any minute. Just a glorified cruise control

You laugh out loud when you fill in an accident report ?

I doubt that very much

Can you quote where I said I laugh out loud filling out accident forms please :unamused:

If wonder if/when trucks are able to drive themselves we will see a reduction in the number of multi-waggon accidents which end up closing trunk roads and motorways for hours on end, some of which are no doubt caused by the cavalier attitude of some steering wheel attendants. Probably, I think.

Juddian:
More like you’ll get a chip inserted, enable direct computer access but really for monitoring and thought control and when you are no longer of any use or fail to be a good little drone during your allocated life span they’ll just turn you off, end…obviously this wouldn’t apply to those who are more equal than others.

You really do buy into everything the Daily Mail feeds you, don’t you? :unamused:

What a surprise. Desypete ■■■■■■■■ about the industry, insulting todays drivers and telling us all how wonderful he was “back in the day” for navigating by the stars. Im only shocked you didnt mention the CPC as well :unamused:

as there on about driver less trucks i take it the cpc will not be needed by then, surely even you could work that out ?

but then again maybe you couldnt hence your comment i forgot your one of those cpc type of drivers, still it could be worse as you could of been one of those class 2 types who needs a sat nav as well as a cpc
i do hope your at least a class 1 type of cpc driver ?

Since you have no cpc and therefor are no longer a truck driver I fail to see what makes you such an expert to keep running the industry down, and insulting everyone in it,to the degree you do every day.
I use a sat nav because they are available. It makes things quicker than using a map. Im not going to justify myself to a bitter, twisted person like you.
You go on and on and on about how great you were back in the day. Its getting boring. Your like a hasbeen actor who sits at a bar getting drunk and going on about how great he used to be. If you were so great, and such a good driver, surely the CPC wouldnt affect your wages since A - your boss would pay and B - you could command huge wages since the employers would be calling non stop for you to work for them. Let me guess, they wern’t beating a path to your door. Explains why your so bitter
Yes I am a cpc type of driver. So is every other commercial driver. Its the law, thats why I need one. Everyone knows its pointless and doesnt actually make you a better driver. But I learned things on the courses for economic driving, load security etc so for me,it wasnt a complete waste of time.
But you continue your stance. BTW,what are you doing about trying to eradicate the CPC? Apart from, shock horror, not getting one? Because I dont think you refusing to get a card is going to make the EU sit and go “oh,if guys like desypete are leaving we need to do something”. Are you sitting at home claiming benefits(that my tax from working pays for) or are you actively doing something? You know, apart from coming on here and spouting your usual verbal diarrhea?

You tell him snowy!

What a fine concept in theory - in practice however, none of these creative geniuses have any experience whatsoever of what the real world job is like - is the computer going to open the curtains in order for the load to be taken off, strap a load down to the bed of the trailer or even self tip at Aldi/Lidl type places, i dont think so ! its just another fine example of people with money not being in touch with reality.

The receiving depots will have their own staff to do these jobs. The automotive industry makes wide use of self load/unload trucks so that could be coming to a supermarket near you. It’s not hard to imagine: A clerk in the office programs a trailer for loading and an fully automatic shunter puts it on the bay. The load is already assembled, so it just has to be pushed into the trailer. When the load is scanned and secure with air bags, an automatic tractor unit will slide under the trailer and take it to the destination depot, where it parks the trailer in a holding area and goes off to the next job.

I cannot see it happening for the last part of the journey to the shop. That will need too much input from the end user. I can see big hauliers and supermarkets using it for inter-depot work with their own fleets though.

I remember the tv show “the outer limits” had an episode where the trucks drove themselves. At one point one of the characters said “I dont even know where my truck is heading”. A scary premonition?

I say that phrase many times a day! Usually when I’m reaching the outer limits of my abilities!

I’d love to see one of these trucks make its way around any of our city centres, find the dodgy back alley where the drop is, squeeze down said alley then go and hunt out some geezer to come and tip itself. Pie in the sky.

Well said and can you imagine them re-planning the route because of night closures or motorway closures due to accidents etc. Quite laughable, yes it works when you have the environment configured for it to work but fails miserably in the reality of our road system and all the possible things that can go wrong. Reminds me of Dr Who and the Daleks when they realised that the Daleks were so vulnerable being effectively a dustbin on castors anout as sturdy as those milk tets

They can’t even get sat navs spot on and they would need to do that as a first step

Hahahahaha what a brillant put down Snowy

I notice some of the true great old drivers have embraced the changes and still keep going and doing and spreading the knowhow without a) saying they’re the best driver ever and b) don’t whinge about having to do work and continue to get the call back.

Amazing really, hope I’m like that when I’m their age and have the same attitude/work ethic as them.

They earn a lot of respect from that and rightfully so…perhaps poor desypete has been “downtrodden” in the recent past hence his outlook on life…poor guy must have fallen from the top branch and fell all the way down the tree.

Can’t see the future happening like this myself, they’ll definitely have the technology produced and ready, which lets be fair the majority of the initial programming etc is in place anyway already in various guises, but they’ll never beat the soical issues. Trouble is us “luddites” as we’d be viewed for saying this, would most probably be more violent and aggressive about the issue than ever has been seen in modern history.

C

Does this mean I will have to get another job!!!,Oh no the computers have got them all!I am therefore redundant, useless.
My first job was digging holes but now a machine does that?.

I wonder if these driverless trucks will put their own fuel in. Save me getting covered in diesel and remembering a pin number.

But can these trucks reverse onto a tight loading bay with a car parked?.

They have to have a driver in to supervise them (until they are perfected) so maybe we will all get a pay rise and job title as “Supervisor” or the full title of “Automated transport self propelled drone human overseer”

are you that poster i called a pillock in another thread ?

if your not the same poster then i think i will call you a pillock in this thread, i hope i spelt it correctly this time ?

i have never said i am the best driver around, i say the old school were the best as they had more skills than todays drivers need, i dont know why you can not see that ?

any idiot or in your case pillock, can drive these days without needing the skills that the old drivers had to learn.

so when and if they go driver less you will be the first to complain of your good old days of being a sat nav, cpc card owner, type of driver.
