The First Step

I’ve just booked my medical on the way to catC and then CE and just have one quick question bearing in mind the new rules starting tomorrow.
I’m 44 so will the medical cert be valid for 5 years or will I have to take another when I’m 45? If I’m reading the DVLA website correctly it’s the former.
TIA.

You’re spot on - the medical will still be valid for 5 years

Thanks for the quick reply, that’s good to know.

I’ve got a friend with a driving agency and he is putting me in touch with a trainer quoting £160 a day (no VAT) which sounds reasonable. When I’m done there’s the offer of adhoc night trunking which suits me, and CatC HIAB work too when the weather improves.
He is going to come with me and show me the ropes when I start, so can’t be bad.

Good luck with it, plenty of good advice on here if you need it.

Well medical done last week, what a joke that was! Sent my licence off straight away and it arrived on my doorstep this morning along with my digicard, very impressed with the quick turn around. I’ve got a week on holiday, then my theory and hpt booked for the day after I get back. I’m looking forward to actually getting behind the wheel of a truck.
Training diaries seem very popular, so I’ll update this thread as I go along.
Thanks to all for the info on this site!

Passed the theory, 100% and wouldn’t have been happy with less, but bizarrely failed the HPT with just 65%. I don’t really know what went wrong, I usually get around 85% in practice and just did 72% when I got back.
I teach people to pass the HPT for Christ’s sake and have passed instructors HPTs more than once. I could blame the mouse which didn’t feel right when I clicked it, but the marker flags came up so it can’t be that…Oh well, I’ve booked a re-test so what’s a week and another £15?

Hey! I wondered if anyone can help.
I have wanted to become a HGV/LGV Driver for a long time, due to a recent change in circumstances, it has been possible to follow this dream!
So… once I have my licence, how would I go about finding work? How does it all work? Do I apply to a company (Morrisons, Ginster for example), or do I have to register somewhere?
Also, can you be selective as to the type of work you do, as I don’t think I would want to drive abroard?!
I hope someone is able to help!
I am really new to all this, and I have no relatives in the industry to ask! I worry if I ask a specific company that I may get biased information!
Thanks
K

There are many posts on the issue of getting work after passing so perhaps a good read of those in the newbies forum is your first step
