Must be money laundering, or eccentric multi millionaires who love buying big flash trucks.
Beat me to it. Laundering . Joking aside, I’ve no experience at all of running a lorry. Yet reading the owner driver posts I can’t see how the hell, they aren’t running a large weekly deficit. Would the mileage rate on boxes even cover the weekly payments? It must work whatever they’re doing

Have heard that there on 4 on 4 off pattern. Also see them all hrs day and night. But very rarely parked up.
Alway seem to be pulling 45ft ecs boxes outta HST.
Even the trailers aren’t the usual box jockeys usual choice, all of them seem to be fixed 40/45 Dennision skellys. Most seem to be on full led lights
Same as any other job making profit is easy if done right , If you set the rate with the owner of the box and not a middle man and you move enough boxes and the truck isn’t stationary not earning then your business model is a winner .
However, It falls apart when the rate is wrong or there are not enough boxes to move to put you in profit. Simples.
It also falls apart when some clown of a big company comes along and undercuts your rates to win the work…As we all know. Then the race to the bottom ensues.
Which is what has happened in most of the industry nowadays.
It’s good to see someone still winning out of the game …Long may it continue as we get to see some proper machinery at work. And a big smile on the drivers face often.

Those fixed 40/45s are lighter and less hassle R+M wise
They make sense if thats all you do [45ft box work], But Id need to be totally convinced that the customer was Kosher, which RK seems to have with ECS.
I have a business contact who knows RK very well and uses him for some ad-hoc Irish traction, he speaks very very highly of him
Of course there’s the additional increased earnings factor with them that no-one’s yet mentioned : all their motors do 58-60mph on the flat which adds up over the day.

Yes, that`s a great point, I drove a FH13 480 yesterday for a customer, with a very healthy 56 on the limiter, didn’t half make the job easier / quicker
Another point regarding RK, what did he get for the one he replaced, his top spec kit will command very decent residuals, and make a proper dint in the Volvo`s invoice price

He can most probally afford it because he’s not paying the overheads the big companies are , a bloke to wash the trucks , pickup + fuel to and from depots must cost 20/25k p.a ,God knows how many of them big companies have , cleaners , hr ,planners , God know how many levels of management etc etc etc , you run a tight ship and the money you waste on that lot can be spent elsewhere
As someone else said if he is running top spec kit and selling it on before its to old he has a very health deposit to put down.
I know if your on direct for the shipping lines the rate will be much better than subbing for maratime Wincanton goldstar etc. However I’m sure I was told you need around 20 motors before they will deal with you direct.
As Harry has said subbing on containers same as doing ferry trailers seems very hard to make a decent return on.
I’ve never heard of kings So couldn’t comment on them.
Gangan:
Does he buy outright or lease? Leasing is far more tax efficient.
If the parent company buys it and leases it to the container haulage subsidiary company who actually haul with it , it’s a win win for the directors who happen to own both !
Being cash rich is a great thing.

Does it matter why not ring him and ask
The guy is successful and has worked dammed hard for what he has today.
His model works for him it may not for others.
Given that the trucks he uses are top of the range, most likely custom speced too, even if they are leased they won’t be cheap. Shows too, they really stand out against the usual mob of container hauliers.

Those figures make bringing the flowers for the wife at Valentines day from Africa to Tesco’s quite horrendous, thought I was bad at causing more than enough green house gasses by burning 8,500 ltr per day of gas oil but that was to cover about 290 mile but at least we carried 2540 ton of cargo.
They’ve been around for years and have always had big motors with fancy paint jobs.
It’s not impossible to earn good money on boxes, but you won’t do it subbing for another haulier, or even direct from the shipping lines. You need to go direct to the forwarder that booked the container, say for example, a removal company and you can do things like this…
You need a 40’ hicube Hapag-Lloyd box to load from Cardiff, you call up Maritime or whoever and get a job with the box type you need for Bristol, tip it, restitute it at Freightliner Bristol and then do a lap of the yard and reload it, you get paid a crap rate from Maritime which will cover your costs and your rate to your customer is a large portion of cherries on top.
