Hi Tone. Told you,you would like it here. Why don`t you post some pics of the loads you used to pull for a living.Might wake up some of the guys who have never used chains and dwangs and think they were the first guys to have a class one or whatever it is now.
Mark.

Not me I got woke up by a one of those mickey mouse chain tensioners hitting me when I released the zb and only used the proper ratchet and screw type ones after that. But a zb four wheeler Clydesdale with 9 tonner bull dozer on the back would’nt get anywhere near 45 mph up Reigate hill so I must try to remember to drive my zb car everywhere at the same zb speed in future.

Okay, you’re right and I’m wrong. Zzzzzzzzzz.I know…

I love the idea of a 70yr old bloke calling people ‘dude’ and the KO smiley is excellent, keep it up canaldrifter
You ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
Looking in you might see a 70 year old, but from where I stand on this side of the eyes I’m still 28. As you get older you’ll understand.
Tone
I’m a way behind you, but over the halfway mark, so I know what you mean dude
Welcome to the site anyway and don’t worry about Rob K, you’ll grow to love him, Carryfast on the other hand, well he’s a silly as a box of frogs, brilliant entertainment though and every once in a while he has a moment of clarity

He might like to think that he’s 28 but he obviously drives like someone of 90.

That’s it then job sorted.Canaldrifter in lane 3,you in lane 2,and me in lane 1 (because nothing could be as slow as that zb Clydesdale going up that hill with that dozer on the back ) (except maybe one of Bewick’s Gardner powered Atkis running empty
) with our cars and that’s the M40 zb’d unless it’s the few miles of the four lane section where maybe one of Bewick’s lot could help us out.

All I can say “Carryfast” is that you want Tg again with that dwang ,only ■■■■■■ harder this time and with luck you may start talking sense instead of the usual Bs that comes out of the orofice you sit on! Cheers Bewick.

So we can’t count on your help then in totally zb’ing up the country’s motorway network by driving our cars at the same speed that we drove our trucks at.
But don’t blame me it was canaldrifter who started the idea and I just thought if you’re going to do the job then let’s do it properly.
I apologise for my absence for a while. Been obsessed with trying to get a narrowboat up the Yorks Derwent in flood conditions. Still haven’t made it. There’s a tree stuck across bridge uprights that needs shifting. (Don’t often see that on the M6.)
With regard to the request for images of loads I used to carry, Some shots can be found at
picasaweb.google.com/irishcanaldrifter/Hauling#
There are a lot more coming. I’m gradually uploading old slides, but it is very time consuming. It’s a winter project.
And the term ‘dwangs’? We used to call 'em, ‘Sylvesters’ or ‘toggles’. A ‘dwang’ was something completely different and was used for plugging holes, not tightening chains! Interesting how terminology changes in different parts of the country, though.
Thanks for the welcome. I’ll try not to be too much of a know-it-all , done-it-all, boring old ■■■■, even if I am one!

I’d not heard of the term either until Bewick told me that’s his description of the zb thing that hit me when I released it after tightening it with a length of metal tubing
.I’ve always called them chain tensioners and never heard them called sylvesters or toggles either but the term dogs yes sometimes.
We call them dwangs up here but Bewick has changed it to "brilliant tool " after it smacked you one.
We also call a tapwrench a dwang.

We also call a tapwrench a dwang.
So if anyone asks someone for a dwang up norf they won’t actually have a zb clue what it is that they actually want.It could be anything from a smack in the head to a zb tapwrench
lol.But if someone’s in A+E up there and the same thing happened I could just imagine them being asked by the doctor what hit you and saying it was either a dwang or a dog.
One thing worse than a sylvester was a manual ratchet jack. When lifting heavy loads, never let go of the handle, was the rule. I’ve seen one thrown about 50 yards.
Many, many years ago we were taking a heavy and wide load through Abergavenny, I think it was, on police ■■■■■■, long before a by-pass existed. One of our convoy had a long trailer. It was dead of night. He couldn’t get round one of the bends.
Our way of dealing with this was to jack up one side of the trailer wheels at a 45 degree angle one side, then jack the other side straight. the wheels would then jump across a couple of feet. Repeat until we could get the trailer round. Except that it backfired, the jack slipped, the handle flew and went straight through the windows of the local bank. The alarm went off, and within minutes the neighbours were gathered around in dressing gowns, watching the police trying to sort it all out.
Happy days.
Tone
