The Driver's Code

Great another car driver who drives everywhere at less than 90 kmh.

Indeed… And they are usually the first to complain about how congested the roads are these days but yet when you point out the connection you just get looked at blankly. :unamused:

Sorry. maybe I’m thick. But can you explain your thoughts a little more? How does driving twixt 50-60mph cause congestion again?

To add to the debate. the way I drive now is to stay with the heavies. It’s relaxing, saves fuel and I can muse about the state of the rear crash bar in front and wonder if some driver really does know how long his trailer is when backing into bays.

If a slightly faster truck comes up behind and pulls out to overtake me, I slow down a couple of mph and let him past as quickly as he can, instead of making him hog the overtaking lane for mile after mile. When he is clear I flash him in, especially in dirty weather, which is another factor not mentioned here yet.

Similarly, if I come across a slower lorry, usually a low loader, doing about 45mph, I pull out and pass. If he flashes me in in my 4x4, I’ll give him the tail-light signal. Quite often the driver will pickup on thefact that I’m one of the old school, and flash a ‘Hi’ on his headlights.

Wots wrong with that guys?

You shouldn’t even be doing 50mph on a motorway! Motorways are there for people and freight to get from A to B as fast as legally possible, not for Sunday drivers who have nowhere to go so dawdle along causing chaos. If you want to drive at a snails pace to save 2p in fuel costs then get on the back roads where you won’t be causing any problems, or better still, catch a [zb] bus. It’s people like you that are the root cause of all the congestion on the roads. You see it on DCs all the time now - everyone forced to do 56mph because the trucks are having to spend their entire time in the outside lane overtaking the ‘nowhere to go, all day to do it’ brigade doing anything from 30-55mph. This means that the rest of us that do actually have places to be have to set off 2 hours earlier because of you selfish [zb]s. Makes my blood boil. ME ME ME, that’s all you care about.

Listen. When I was young I was a selfish git on the roads like you are now. I learned that I was wrong. Life is about helping each other, not stabbing each other in the back or trying to score points off each other on the roads. Driving is not a competitive sport on public roads. If you want to race, go truck racing. Others are not there to delay you. they are just going about their business, legally, but more slowly than you.

I hope you learn soon too, but not the hard way. I’ve seen many who have done it that way, taking out school-children, whole families in private cars, and falling asleep behind the wheel.

Check the rules. There is no minimum speed limit on motorways. It only mentions ‘slow moving vehicles’ such as mobile cranes or heavy low loaders. Bear in m ind that in some States of America 50mph is the MAXiMUM speed limit.

Do I cause you to pull out and overtake?

And you can’t cope?

I wonder if your transport manager reads here.

The old double nickel speed limit in the States is a thing of the past (55 actually not 50) but even when it was in force those ‘selfish gits’ were regularly running trucks at around 100 mph with more radar detectors and longer range CB radio gear to gather intelligence on what the smoky bears were getting up to than GCHQ has got. :laughing:But taking out whole families on the road is more likely to result from what happens when someone has to get into lane 2 with a truck to overtake you and your lot and the car in lane 2 doing 60 mph wants to overtake him and then gets hit up the back by the rep doing 90 mph in his Vectra in lane 3. :unamused: :open_mouth:

Selfish? How? The only selfish people are those such as yourself that are not using them for their purpose and causing chaos.

World English Dictionary motorway (ˈməʊtəˌweɪ)

– n
( Brit ) superhighway , US names: expressway a main road for fast-moving traffic, having limited access, separate carriageways for vehicles travelling in opposite directions, and usually a total of four or six lanes

Either use them properly or GTFO and use the back roads. Inconsiderate selfish [zb] like you should be banned from driving altogether.

Oh well. You are just exposing yourself on here.

I can see nothing worth looking at, frankly.

I’m trying to understand you. You are suggesting that anyone doing less then, say, sixty, on motorways shouldn’t be there?

So a police patrol, cruising at 50mph is anathema?

A breakdown waggon towing an artic at 45mph is just a nuisance to you?

A low loader hauling heavy shouldn’t be there?

Anyone slowing down for an obstruction is an idiot?

In blinding snow, ice or fog, anyone doing less than the speed limit is a ■■■■■

I think I know who the real ■■■■ is here.

According to your previous posts you’re referring to driving a car not a wrecker pulling an artic,or a heavy haulage low loader, and you did’nt say anything about running at such low speeds because of an obstruction on the road,or blinding conditions. As for police cars being driven at 50 mph for no reason that would be the driver’s guvnor who is a zb for allowing him to do it.

It’s really very simple and for someone such as yourself who has claimed in this thread and others that you’ve done it all and got every T-shirt going, you really should know better and set an example of how it should be done. ie. leave the truckers to get on with their own thing in lane 1 at 56 and you get your toe down to at least 60 so they’ve never having to overtake you at cruise or on the overrun. With you driving at just under their limit all you are doing is “forcing” them into lane 2 which then means that all the 60-65mphers in lane 2 jump into lane 3 which causes everything else to back up and before you know what’s happened the motorway has a queue of traffic doing 40mph from the concertina effect. That’s all it takes to cause chaos, I see it over and over again when I’m up and down the M1 to London and it’s the same inside lane cars doing 50 that are the cause every single time.

Of course I expect another your “it’s not my fault, I’m not doing anything wrong, everyone else is an idiot” replies so perhaps it’s best if you don’t bother replying further and we agree to disagree on your (imho) poor driving skills.

Lets put it like this. In thirty years of driving heavies (mostly low loaders) I have probably driven a few hundred thousand more miles than you ever will, much of them at about 40mph so that my tyres don’t blow with the loads I was carrying, but you wouldn’t even understand that.

In my little 4x4 I, in my retired seventies, I now drive at those same speeds, because I’m chilled, not in a hurry, and enjoying the view. All of that is legal on motorways whether you like it or not.

If I get in your way, then tough. I am quite willing to flash you in if you overtake, and help you do so.

But, if you think I should not be there on the motorway at 50-55mph, then try to find any, I mean ANY, legal reason why I should not be there, and I will not use motorways ever again at all.

Get real, dudes.

You are bang out of order, legally. And that really does worry me when I think you lads are in charge of big rigs.

Maybe you should be driving pedal cars. I think that would be more apt to your childish mental attitudes.

It is a good thread though. I do love a fight.

Having moved several 400 and 450 diggers on low-loaders myself I “understand that” perfectly well thanks :unamused: . However your comment has absolutely no relevance to the discussion other than being a futile attempt at belittling me because you are unable to furnish me with any genuine reason for travelling at such ridiculously slow speeds on the motorways.

In my little 4x4 I, in my retired seventies, I now drive at those same speeds, because I’m chilled, not in a hurry, and enjoying the view. All of that is legal on motorways whether you like it or not.

You are correct in that you are doing nothing illegal, however just because it is not illegal does not make it right. Whether you like it or not the traffic ‘flows’ at 70-80mph on our motorways, which I am sure you are well aware of, even through your extremely blinkered eyes. Driving at the speeds you do you are essentially creating a rolling road block for all the other road users.

If I get in your way, then tough.

What an incredibly selfish person you are. :unamused:

I am quite willing to flash you in if you overtake, and help you do so.

I have no desire to participate in your pathetic light flashing games. The only thing you need to do is press the pedal on the right with your foot.

But, if you think I should not be there on the motorway at 50-55mph, then try to find any, I mean ANY, legal reason why I should not be there, and I will not use motorways ever again at all.

The fact that you are 70, still stuck in the 1950s and have absolutely no spatial awareness nor any understanding of the cause and effects of congestion on our motorways is more than enough reason for you never to use the motorways ever again. Sadly for the rest of us that have to suffer your inconsiderate driving there isn’t any law to prevent you from doing such, which is a great pity as it would remove fossils such as yourself that still think you are in the 1950s where you are the only thing on the road and can therefore drive however you like as it wouldn’t affect anyone else. :unamused:

Time for you to wake up and get in the real world.

Turn the key. Wind 'em up, and off they go again like flapping tin penguins. You are so predicable… and quite funny with it.

My reference to tyres was entirely relevant as that gives the reason why I would be driving slowly on motorways, not in the 50s, in the 80s, and 90s.

‘just because it is not illegal does not make it right.’ Eh? Surely you mean ‘because it’s legal it’s not wrong’.

‘The traffic ‘flows’ at 70-80mph on our motorways’ does it? Not on any motorway I have travelled where two LGV’s are struggling to overtake each other, and both drivers are so far up their own rectums that they won’t back off a little for mile after mile after mile… after mile.

One little 4x4 doing 50-55mph is ‘essentially creating a rolling road block for all the other road users.’

Ha ha ha ha ha… deep breath… ha ha ha ha ha!!

You are talking a load of old

There’s probably enough evidence there for any copper worth his wages to book you for driving without due care and attention and driving without consideration for other road users. But the next time we’re all feeling chilled, not in a hurry, and enjoying the view it would be much more ‘enjoyable’ in that case for everyone to drive at 30 mph along the motorway then we could flash you in when you overtake us at 50 mph assuming that you’ll be able to enter the motorway at all because of the tailback that we’ve created. :open_mouth:

I’ve spent the last six months or so, driving around at 43-45mph max… it’s the maximum speed of the vehicle I’ve been driving.

What makes me laugh is the number of other drivers who seem to try and force me off the road…hmmmmm

And more amusing are the ones who over take me and then give the left/right indicators even though I havn’t flashed them in…

Funny old world!

I love the idea of a 70yr old bloke calling people ‘dude’ and the KO smiley is excellent, keep it up canaldrifter

i just love all these that don’t need any help, last week i was on a tip in bradford, having done the drop a couple of times, i know the best thing is to drive past the gates and spin round on the island to back in drivers side, which is what i did, tipped, i’m just pulling canopy back and a fella with a taut comes in nose first at warp factor 9, jumps out and says “i’ve only got one pallet!” ok mate no bother, the forkie takes his pallet off and signs the notes, “you want watching out mate?” no! was the terse reply, the fella then attempts to blindside it out at a simular speed to which he entered the yard, clouted the gate and left it swinging on one hinge! i left shortly after leaving our mate to sort out the details with the company as to who is going to pay for the gate!
i’ll tell you what, all those who think they can do this job on their own, you crack on! me? i’ll take and give all the help i can.

paul b:

That’s where it’s at in the world that matters… and that’s not this world, believe me.
