The wages may be crap but what about the freedom of the open road we enjoy.
No boss looking over our shoulder, apart from mobile phones, GPS tracking devices, fleetboard monitoring systems etc.
The ability to do our work as we see fit, apart from overbearing HSE mandates and risk assessments that tell us exactly how to do every aspect of the job.
The open road itself, apart from constant traffic hold ups and congestion, speed cameras every hundred yards, every Tom, ■■■■ or Harry videoing you if you make a mistake, cyclists, Audi drivers etc.
But there’s the saving grace, the camaraderie, except for the ex SAS, chalk round the lorry on a bay, I’m on 25quid an hour, it’s not my regular lorry, I normally drive a gold plated supermegatoptrotterXXL, just doing this quick local then I’m off to Beijing types that surround you as you are forced to wait in a cage whilst loading or unloading.
All that excitement and you want good wages too?

The boss came on here a few years back spitting his dummy out because he didn’t like hearing home truths.
I’m on for Pollocks. Have been for about a year now out of one of their North East ‘out bases’…
So why haven’t I moved / jumped ship now I have a bit of experience since passing my class 1…■■?
It’s not worth it. All other companies local - even up to 2 hours away, are paying roughly the same! 
So when I’ve broken down this job… It a piece of P compared to what you would do in another job for the same wage round here…
