Does anybody remember when the A74 was being rebuilt as motorway possibly in the 80s there was a whole load of foreign registered tippers on the job. I seem to remember it was around the Gretna area. The rumour was that they were Italian. Does anybody know the what the score was?

Castelli Girola,or summit like that was the firm, came over with no idea, but likely cheap, polluted rivers, ran on red, ended up getting put off job,Barrs did at least some of the ‘sorting out’ of the job after that I think?

The Gadgy who has the Sandwich shop at Warwick Bridge probably had advanced warning when CG passed through passport control at Red Dial,so he “boarded” up his premises and had the rest of the day off at home eh!!! Bewick.
It dosen’t bear thinking about, the price of diesel to-day Paul, but thinking back over the years the price of derv was as relevent then as it is to-day in actual monetary terms. The problem as I see it with regards to to-days operating costs,is that hauliers have not kept their rates up in line with the rises in derv costs.I can recall a steady percentage of 20/22% spend on fuel out of a vehicles earnings, this did rise a bit in the early 80’s but then dropped back again until the early 90’s.Wages,NHI and drivers exces.accounted for another similar 20/22% IIRC.So to-day the industry has arrived at a point where 50 or maybe 60% of earnings is going straight out in fuel cost,so IMO all the blame cannot be laid at the door of the fuel cos. and,of course,HMG takes over 60% of the cost of a litre of derv in taxes! Most of the blame can be put down to hauliers believing they can operate at suicidal rates.Over 20 years ago I can re-call we were getting £16 per ton to the London area for 20ton loads of paper, and a lot more for smaller deliveries, what kind of rates are to be had now-a-days for hauling a similar load over 275 miles or so? Cheers Dennis.

Aye I know there’s Passport,or to use modern jargon,Border Control,at Maryport but thats only if your boarding a White Star clipper to emigrate to “The New World” !! have you ever thought of doing that CG,they are looking for likely lads like you in America, who knows what you could achieve, you could probably make “fast eddie” look like a novice compared to the outfit you could create in the USA running 3000miles from coast to coast Oh! but would the string be long enough on the 'Lal wooden motor!!! Cheers Bewick.
