with the lack of work during what should be a busy time as an indicator of what will be coming in january, im leaving the industry. next week i have a preliminary telephone interview followed by an official interview next month for a job starting in january working for virgin. thanks to a contact with a good reputation within the company i am being considered for a job as a team leader instead of entry level. its not going to be easy having a set routine after the working life that i have had but its a stable income and thats what i need now.
i sincerely hope that those who have jobs manage to keep them and those currently without do find work soon.
Strange that while some are leaving the job for lack of work - others are run off their feet (or wheels). There seems to be no obvious explanation for this and I wonder what others think?
i didnt need a job with virgin to get that tag Rog. im pretty sure it was growing back until i got used on wednesday night but thats a different story
cheers mate
from what i can gather, the work up here is still thin on the ground and i am not the only driver bailing out. a lot of my colleagues at NAS are not hanging around for 2014. they wont pay for the drivers CPC so they are planning to leave the profession too. i dont expect the agency to pay but im not surprised that drivers do not want to pay either. a bit of refreshing on the legal side or driving economically is fine but 35 hours and you have to foot the bill? its not worth it for agency drivers unless there really is no other option as an income.

The drivers that are run off their feet are probably working for peanuts and just working for the sake of working and hoping that if they can ride out the storm, work may eventually pick up, along with the rates.

6 months too late. i have invested a fortune on a brand new set of work clothes, trousers, shirts, kevlar boots, windproof jacket, t-shirts over the past few months. luckily i can use most of it in this new job as it is all black so i can get away with it as smart casual in a company with no dress code

Depends what you mean by peanuts - That is an assumption which you can’t back with facts.
That is a good move in my opinion.
What we are experiencing now is a blip, we fall off the edge in 10 - 12 months time when the UK will be officially declared bankrupt and interest rates will be at an all time high.
It`s not going to be pretty.
All the best in your new job.
Its a fact Santa. Im an OD and Ive been undercut by these so called muppets. I Know the rates that they are working for because i have good inside information. Theres plenty of work for the man thats willing to work for nothing. And now theyre whinging and moaning that they can`t make it pay. Tough [zb] i say.
I’m run off my feet as well, doing silly hours, but i know the clock is ticking and i’m trying to save some money up for the new year. I’m doing supermarket deliveries hopefully will still get work in the new year but i imagine at best it will be only a few days a week.
A job with Virgin sounds good ive heard they are a good company to work for, if i could get something like that i would jump at it.
i knew i would be leaving the industry but i had intended carrying on as a hobby but under the circumstances, if i have a full time job i would be taking work from other drivers who are relying on it for an income and i am not prepared to do that.
Kenny, if south gyle isnt too far then by all means get in touch. i am looking for a job on the night shift which starts in january and if i get it i will be responsible for hiring and firing within my own team. im bound to have dead weight to get rid of so i will be looking for good staff who are prepared to work for a living
ive been working flatout for an agency for the last 12 months…good money…never earnt so much money before…5/6 shifts a week…lately ive been on a contract 5 shifts a week…my shortest shift last week was 12 1/4 hours.the agency have been calling me and getting on my case to work 6 shifts…?
i just took on a job at the contract on a fulltime basis…still not sure if ive done the right thing?

I have been on trade plates since I retired and I have found our job as gone slack. the few trucks that are being moved, most of the firms concerned are using their own drivers, usually they use us for inter depot movements ,because its to busy to take their own drivers off the road for a day, but at the present time there is no work for them to do so they are moving there own stuff, Its costing me a bloody fortune
For me personally work has never been busier, last two weeks been on the road all week doing long distance runs into Devon and Cornwall, not only that I’ve been getting good return loads which has cut down the empty running and boosting my pay packet
Get plenty of moans from the day drivers about the lack of local work recently though.
