The Challenge Group Agency

So I turn up 10 minutes early for my first shift with a company called Black Bear Haulage ltd only to be told sorry mate our insurance won’t cover you.
Now upon registering with challenge group they’d mentioned BlackBear and I’d said at the time don’t they require 2 Years experience only to be told you’ll be alreet’ lad.
So where do I stand now?
I really think the agency should be paying me for the shift I had booked in for tonight. Also got another 2 shifts booked in for this week.
For those of you that are going to slate me for going on Agency don’t bother.
I’d love to work for one company but personal circumstance means that’s not an option I can choose.

The agency should pay you for your shift, If they knew you didn’t have the required 2 years experience, tbh this 2 year experience is bollox and an excuse as usually it has nothing to do with insurance. How old are you?

If I was in your situation I would expect to be paid for 8 hours. If agency didn’t pay up I’d tell them exactly where to go.

If you have problems finding work due to lack of experience it’s probably better to try with larger companies such as supermarkets who will be self-insuring.

I’m 43.
To be honest the guy at BlackBear was decent enough and said he’d fight my corner to ensure I got paid.

A lot of employers ignore the 2 year experience, especially when it suits them. Soon as the busy season starts and drivers are in short supply you don’t hear a mention of 2 year experience. The agency will pay you as it is their fault trying to put you into a job that the customer has requested you to have 2 years driving. Don’t worry mate there are plenty that will take you.

Too many crooks and not enough braves.

There’s too many outfits calling themselves agencies that’ll f— over a driver on their maiden assignment as well.

It’s hardly any wonder that agencies in general end up getting such a bad reputation among the most valuable asset they’ll ever have as a legitimate business - their drivers.

Good news as I’m being paid for 8 hours, also working tonight for stobbarts out of salmesbury

He giveth with one hand then taketh with the other!

Next time …After being told “sorry, no work” phone the agency before leaving site, do not leave until you have spoken to them. Then when you do speak to them insist on 8hrs min, as you have made every effort to turn up promptly, it’s likely they will attempt to phone the haulier to get a resolution ie try to get them to keep you on site and use you. It’s usually at this point the agency will give up & tell you to go home with 8hrs paid.

I thought Stobarts was a cushy number - on agency.

I was led to understand that the work was always OK, it’s just the full timer’s pay that was rubbish. Get paid a decent wedge via Agency therefore, and I understood that being put into Stobarts was no better or worse than an agency putting you into Royal Mail at Christmas time…

Stobarts as an agency driver is like being a king, the best trucks, best jobs and higher rate of pay than the stobart drivers.

See it every morning

You’re kidding me right?..

I’ve had the roughest sheds in the yard offered to me when I’ve driven for them over the years.

The one with the drivers door that didn’t open, the one with the broken drivers seat and the one with a large bottle of urine in it… All had the keys lobbed back.

Completely off topic but, I know a bloke who was trying to fix the exhaust on his daughters car , he had lifted it up with the front loader on the farm, he then tried to move it into a barn as it started to rain, but it slipped off the forks, landed on the drivers side and rolled onto the roof. He got it righted and running, the lass used that car for about 6 months having to get in and out of the passengers side, bloke from the MOT station wouldn’t give him the certificate, so that was the end of it. It was one of those 205GTIs, the lass was only upset as everyone kept saying to her she most of rolled it when she hadn’t. The whole family is barking mad

Well shift at Stobbarts was good. 13.5hr shift, two year old Volvo unit equals no grumbles. 400 mile round trip

Good to hear everything got sorted for you.
Whilst you’re on agency use it to help yourself by doing a variety of work and getting to know who the companies that are worth working for full time, prove yourself as reliable and hard working and you will be surprised how many companies will ask if you want a permanent role.

Stick with Stobarts mate, they are the King of the road. Get the 2 yr experience you want then go where you like.

Thanks for the wisdom. Looks as though it’s agency for the foreseeable future unless there’s some operators out there that allow you to work as and when you can rather than dictating when you’ll work. I live in hope.
