The Big Countdown to 50 mph

So England and Wales you can do 50mph, and in Scotland on the A9 you can do 50mph but the rest eh scotland is off limits then.

Offft driving between berwick and Kelso you can hardly see the border sign, better keep my eyes peeled for the fuzz hiding behind the bushes

I’ll ā– ā– ā– ā–  my sides if someone comes on here next month complaining about being done for 56mph. ā€œI thought you got 10%+2!?ā€.

Wouldn’t surprise me if the local constabularies have their eyes on this date as fundraising for a potentially extra lavish Xmas do this year.

Anyone know what speed Tescos will be taking our safety seriously at?

45.6 mph i hear if tesco own, if it stobart then it warp speed 9

That would be an improvement on the 38.8mph one of Steady’s was doing this evening along the A47.

I await the inevitable spike in A-road deaths after April…

The government know that it will cause more deaths and injury, but the are still going ahead any way.

The thing I thought about was, would those drivers that like to hang the job out, or those keeping to a strict 39mph, start to get spoken to by TMs regarding the time they’ve taken given the raised speed limits. You get plenty complaining on here about the office ringing asking why they’re so slow.

That depends on one thing mate, whether you have been brainwashed by your boss into thinking that sitting at 39 on a 40 legal limit, and getting your drops off at a sensible and safe pace is interpreted as ā€˜hanging the job out’ :unamused:
On the other end of your question would those drivers that already sit on the limiter all day, and teararse about like a [zb] idiot, not having time to stop for a ā– ā– ā– ā– , and treat the job as some kind of challenge/endurance test, get spoken to by the TMs and ask why they cannot manage to do even more now given the raised ā€˜speed target’. I for one [zb] hope so.

I agree entirely, but the mindset in this industry seems to be that, those who do the job by the book, sticking to speed limits, taking breaks correctly etc are the ones that get the mick taken out of them, but those that fly around cutting every corner are praised. I’ve never worked anywhere that disciplined anyone for getting the job done quicker, even ASDA, who told you to take your time, all the time, never bothered even when it was obvious.

As to if I will do 50 on a single carriageway, depends on if the expensive tracker system in use by head office stops sending ā€˜you have been speeding’ messages to the depot!
We get penalised for speed and engine idle with this lot, not going to give them any ammunition quite yet!

No, it’s not the mindset of the industry, it’s the mindset of the latter, and the latter taking the mick out of the former, being that they are ignorant brainwashed and misguided. You are right when you say they are praised, but in reality they are thought of as gullible fools by their bosses, being that they risk their licenses and livelihoods, but if they don’t care their bosses sure as hell won’t, as these guys are ten a penny.

Hello! …it’s gone a bit quiet… Has the penny finally dropped to one or two after reading my last post?

It’ll make no difference to how I drive. If I don’t feel comfortable doing a speed it’s not safe so I won’t do it.

Ironically for me ive just got a notice of prosecution through for doing 50mph on a major A road ! I wait for the charge to come through with the offer of a speed awareness course which i ahould be offered as i havent had one before and according to the accompanying notice i am within the boundaries allowed to be eligible for one… now if i get offered a course isnt it a bit ironic that i will sit on the course that is telling me that my speed was safe according to legislation !!!

Hope the police clamp down on those who decide they want to stick to 40.
Can’t drive at a decent speed for the road or conditions get off the road.

If you do happen to be sitting on a course for ā€˜speeding’ in April, i’d flog that story to a tabloid for a few bob.

Doubt 10mph under will be considered driving excessively slow. I guarantee there will be a few, probably in supermarket wagons, who’ll refuse to change tact on ā€˜health & safety grounds’ (ie. to be awkward); probably including that Tesco driver who had the fire brigade rescue him from a broken down tail lift.

I’d be tempted to opt for a court appearance for the charge. If the date comes before April 6th provide a sicknote to get it deferred to a date after the 6th and hey presto you’re appearing in court on a charge that no longer exists.

I’d love too think the fact I can now do 50 mph legally ( it will be limiter 90 % as before ) will make my days shorter ,but I’m sure I’ll still be sat waiting for a truck, tri, load for hours as before ,so in the grand scheme of things it’s not going too make a lot of difference
Will this apply too tractors ( Bain of my life ) ,no thought not :unamused: :unamused:

Interesting crack kerb dog has fallen into would be good to see what a proper legal eagle thought of it. At the time he was caught it was an offence, the time it came to court it was no longer an offence?

ajt-you have moved up to my ā€˜faves’ list. Driving below the limit when the road conditions are safe to drive ā€˜at’ it builds frustration amongst some drivers and this inevitably fuels the impulse to overtake.

I say they should be birched. Naked. With a gas mask on…erm I need to stop.

Lets hope we all remember its a speed limit regardless of what it is ,not a goal regardless of conditions

You’ve answered your own question.

What would you think in the flip side of this with reference to the recently reduced drink drive limit in Scotland? Someone stopped the day before the change came in an blew between the new and old limit, they weren’t nicked but do you think the coppers could go back the next day and say, ā€œthe amount of alcohol in your system yesterday is now an offence today so you’re being charged with drink driving.ā€

Or you use a bus lane during the time it is live between 7:00am and 7:00pm and are given a ticket. Do you think you could pop up the police station at twenty-past seven that evening and say, ā€œit’s not an offence now, here’s your ticket back.ā€

Tempting as it is, as the law goes i am guilty of speeding unfortunately… i think the time lapse between the ball rolling with the law makers and it actually becoming law must have something to do with resetting the cameras and whatever else they do.

As for the legal beagle post. I do agree but knowing my luck i will end up with the 3 points instead of the course if i rattle the bee hive !!! Just grit my teeth and accept the course and fine. Like i said, i am guilty of speeding on that day in the eye of the law. The problem for me comes when i will be sitting there on the course being told i need to be more aware of my speed as its dangerous when lawfully they will have moved the goalposts because actually its not dangerous…its actually more dangerous to do 40 with other vehicles doing 60 and getting frustrated behind you !!!

Just to let you know. I was northbound on the A605 towards peterborough, between the a14 and the a1(m)… might be worth keeping to 40 on that stretch till April 4th
