Muckaway:
Oh dear, I must completely change the way I drive…![]()
Anyway, I’ve not heard anyone stand up for an air cooled Maggie Deutz yet…
The air cooled Deutz in our old loading shovel was one of the few I have seen to overheat…lock up(seize)…cool down…restart from the key …and go striaght back to work without any further attention. Apparently the Gardner were legendary for this as well. The ■■■■■■■ 10 & 14 litre engines could do the same. A few of the fitters at a local bus depot with over 200 buses(coaches & citybuses)recently told me in the 12 years they ran the L10 ■■■■■■■■■■■■ only ever replaced two engines. The drivers used to regularly arrive back in the depot without a drop of water in the engine(waterpipes burst etc) and the engine literally glowing red. All they used to do was let the vehicle cool down, fix the water leak…refill the coolant and put it staright back to work. The same fleet today with the Latest Daf,Scania,Volvo & Merc engines consumes 5 or 6 engines every year.
We have had legendary service from Merc engines as well…they just seem to go on and on…and then there’s a queue of exporters at your gate waiting to give you decent money for it and send it off to Bongo Bong land for some more punishment.
Oh and Iveco/Fiat…maybe the rest of the truck might be of questionable build quality but they do build a very good engine…
