Although I live an ocean away from you all I still listen to radio 2 and 4 and in particular the Archers when I get the chance. In an episode this week Charlie the irritating little ■■■■■■ of a farm manager was giving some guy a lecture about how he ran the harvest and was the GPS up to date on his combine harvester ? … WTF ? … How has the farming industry now come to the point where a bloke doing the harvesting etc needs a GPS ? … An image now springs to mind of each guy on their combine or baler setting his sat nav … Errr … ‘I’ll just type in THE OTHER SIDE OF THE FIELD’
Hope they don’t get lost if the thing stops working.
Apparently the combine, tractor or whatever is driven round the perimeter of the field to let the GPS sort itself out then the machine can run up and down doing it’s job without a driver.
Lol I bet as a profession more drivers than any other listen to the Archers have several friends who if on the phone at 7 will say gotta go it’s Archers time and yes I listen too got hooked while doing Spain as you can get long wave over there most annoying when the cricket is on tho
GPS sowing and harvesting been around years especially your way

Maybe but ‘Our way’ the fields are about 10 miles by 10 miles LOL.
I used to listen to the Archers when I drove in the UK too, one day when I was on Fed Ex, I was driving north on the A 43 near Brackley and the cab phone rang at 2.05 pm, this was in the very early 90’s so it was the old style phone with cord to the module on the dash, it was the transport manager and before he could get a full sentence out I shouted “Do you know what time it is ?”
“Yes, it’s just after 2, why ?”
“Because the Archers is on, don’t ever call me when the Archers are on”
He sighed and said “I’ll call you back in 15 minutes”

If you have a smart phone just download ‘TUNE IN’ app and listen every day in any country
say you have a combine with header 40 ft wide ,no matter how good a driver you are it will overlap /miss ,so if you lose 3 or 4 ft per pass it will soon add up doing big acreage

The Archers has always been a Government propaganda broadcast, “ooh arr Betty, do you eat five portions of fruit a day?” etc.
Yep have the Archers on and the shipping forecast has to be done.turn my phone on silent when the archers are on oops lol
GPS is used for ‘smart farming’…the yields from each part of a field can be mapped and measured by the harvester and seed and fertilizer application rates adjusted accordingly when the field is next sown.

Not exactly a satnav though as we know it. Anything the increase yield is a good thing, and gps has done that no end in the transport industry *await barrage of abuse from technophobes *

As I posted above Steve … I have the ‘TUNE IN’ app on my Droid and hook it to the truck sound system via the AUX socket, I can then listen to any radio station from any country.
You do need a good Data package though, I have 6 GB’s a month and rarely get through half of my allowance. Heart FM, Northant’s is one of my regulars.

Think you may be listening to a different version of The Archers to me
It’s called ‘EZ Steer’, it’s on youtube. Or at least that’s one of the models…
We’ve just had it fitted to our tractors this year.
