… when you realise you have taken a turning that you really shouldn’t have, the road is getting narrower and narrower, and people out walking their dogs gape with amazement that such a vehicle should be in such a place, and you can see them thinking “How the hell is he going to get round that next corner■■?”
no its not just you mate been there myself doing farm drops farmer told me to come down a lane 3 miles down just half a mile to go and guess what i found yep an 11 foot bridge farmer never knew it was there so i had to back all the bloody way
i got stuck in a shopping centre in hatfield after i took a wrong turn at a roundabout and there was no way out for 2 hrs untill the car park cleared a bit, but yes i know that sinking feeling very well, and mad at myself for being a plonker
I did it in a car when I moved to Melbourne, there is a lane just after Swarkestone Causeway and I went exploring, it is about 3 miles long I discovered later. I drove down passing a couple of dog walkers, they both waved (I Think) and I went on, the ruts got deeper, the road disappeared and the water was almost up to the door handles of my Volvo.
I managed to keep it moving and it was bottoming out, or maybe even floating. The road got steeper, the water drained away and this lane was rutted so badly that I thought it was the end of the car. Somehow I got back to some decent going at the other end of the lane and managed to get onto the main road. My passenger was less impressed and still talks about it now, in hindsight I wouldn’t go down it again in a farm tractor or an off road motorcycle
not me but a couple of years ago i was camping in a feild in scotland when an artic followed by a rigid drove past our campsite on a single track dirt road over a bridge that was just wide enough and up the track into the middle of a scottish nowhere where we were holding a 4x4 offroading weekend.
there had been a crash on the main road and the diversion sent the traffic down our way…but should have turned left at the crossroads…but these 2 went straight over.
the rigid realised he had made a mistake and stopped…took a tractor to get him turned round…but the artic carried on up the hill into the yard of a disused farm…took us over an hour of winching with several 4x4s to get him turned round so he could get out.
made our weekend that did.
i have pics somewhere still i think.
yep me done that, geezer i asked said"next left driver" so that"s wot i took, now, the 12 foot hedge ,and wide enough only for my truck road , should have set off my inner sat nav ! but no, on iplodded until , very shortly 1st very tight bend !11 then , squeeze out off unit, walk back to ALL the car drivers stopped behind me … pleased 2 have backed it out, angry i didn"t assess the road on way in ! (wiping sweat from forehead as i post, and that was 7 years ago)

Did you ever find out which one of your lot changed the diversion sign so you all got a chance to play?
I fell sorry for that driver. He’s sat in an RDC telling of the time he took a wrong turning and ended up stuck only for a load of people appear from nowhere in 4x4’s and winch him out and the only response will be, “Oh yeah, and I suppose at other times you missed that ferry and have had chalk lines drawn round your truck.”
Those bloody farms.Few years back had to drop a load of insulation at a barn conversion, there’s nobody on site drive but here’s the directions and where to put I It was about a mile to the farm down a track road off a dual carriage way .About half mile down came to a right turn no chance, gets on the phone and reply was the tractor gets down there So I only had one choice phone the old bill to close the dual carriageway which they did about an hour and half later for me to back out the joys of working for yourself when the ■■■■ hits the fan your on your own

try turning into this road in the pitch black with an artic
1
the place i wanted was about a mile down this road, but, apparently, i should have come in from the other direction
and this was further down the road

in the bottom right corner of the street view image, there is the overhead view, i had to take the left turn into the side road
I’ve done that job… I recognise it, and I also came in the same way as you lol.
There was already a Turners wagon in there when I got in and he had a good laugh at my expense.
When you come out, you turn right out of the ‘lane’ and right at cross roads and it takes you back to the main road, when you look, you think… Ahh, why did I go the other way
It’s units on a farm isn’t it? 20’ if I remember correctly.

no, that place is in Cornwall, turned in straight off the A30, the place i was going to is called Jaspers, it is an abattoir that does cow hides and sheep skins
the post code puts it on that road, then take the right turn into the side road shown on the 2nd pic which is their access road, that one does the cow hides, the sheep skins come from their new place further down the road, out of the gate, turn left and follow that for another mile, then it is on the right
when you come out of there, turn right out of the gate, follow that to a junction where there is a big tree in the corner of the field, the turn left, that takes you back to the main A30
We had a job delivering rolls of loft insulation, we had an old 40footer box van, single axle on the arse end which was ideal for the lightweight job. Mainly rdc’s but one day I have the last drop at a hardware store in an underground delivery area at a Telford shopping centre.
Now this 40ft needs a little more room on the corners so going down this ramp into this place I ask a trolley dolly coming out if I’ll get round the square one way circuit, he looks at the trailer I have , "yeh a little tight but you’ll do it ".
I gingerly try the first corner, the tyres are rubbing the kerbs, so looks like he’s right, I’ll just get round, 2&3 corners the same, last corner to complete the square, 2 steel posts on the corners not an ■■■■■■ chance. Some bright spark suggests I reverse out , eventually as its only a lightweight trailer I find a fork lift big enough to lift the rear underun bar and nudge the thing round the corner
definitely a ■■■■ clencher that day
Yep!! sounds familiar! My nightmares are personal effects. Always in residential areas delivering 40feet of some rich buggers house and sitting there for 9 hours tipping, and they don’t even offer a cuppa. Don’t even ask to use the loo!!!.
When I know i’ve got one, found google maps/sattelite very useful, at least it lets you know what to expect.

oh, and it was a 40’ container, not a 20’
Ahh, ok, my bad, the road looks identical to the other job, maybe I should’ve clicked on the map

Used to enjoy personal effects, always found the customers to be friendly, welcoming and polite.
Always been given a brew, never had any issues with the toilet - although I would never dream of going for a number 2 in someone elses house…
Did 1, they’d been told they’d have to arrange another place for me to park and move the stuff using a van, I looked at the location and found it would be safe enough, but explained if I was asked to move, I would and we’d go to the previous arrangement, was an 7hr tip so if I’d had to go the other place, would’ve been well over 15hrs, they were gratefull, never had any issues and got a nice ‘thanks’ afterwards for the fuel and time (and demurrage) saving.
