Thankyou from a cyclist

Hello all

Not a lorry driver, but a car driver and a cyclist who rides more than he drives.

Just passing by to say thanks. I know the tabloid press is full of anti-cyclist stuff, and I’m sure if I go looking for it here I’ll inevitably find some of it here, but…just want to express my thanks to the lorry drivers I encounter on the road. They are by a country mile the most considerate drivers when I’m on the bike, not impatient, not trying to intimidate by driving on my back wheel, and invariably giving me loads of room when passing, and never rushing it. I can’t remember the last time I had a dangerous overtake from an HGV. Years I reckon.

It is greatly appreciated, and just wanted to say thankyou!

No worries mate .
I don’t think any driver (of a truck or other vechile ) would want it on their conscience that they had run down a cyclist. I try my best to give yous all as much room as possible , mostly it really dosen’t cost us much time . One question for you - and its not me having a go , just curious , why in the last few years have most cyclists changed from nice bright day glow neon pinks , greens and yellows to mostly black? From a truck drivers view up high looking down it can be harder to pick you out when your in below trees in shadow .

Good to know mate cheers…nice to get a bit of good press for a change.
There is a bit of anti cyclist feeling on here tbh with a few members, (I’m sure you are about to witness some anytime soon btw) but mostly because of the minority of kamikaze cyclists we see every day, but then again there are a lot of arrogant truck drivers around also, and those two groups are usually the ones who stand out most and become the centre of focus, and those who make the headlines…unfortunately for both groups.

I do a lot of driving on country roads,.and I always give both cyclists and horse riders plenty of room, losing a couple of minutes for a bit of common courtesy has never been a problem to me personally.

I think it’s fashion, Beefy. About 5 years ago white was all the rage, then it was black, and now its dark greens and blues.

I always used to wear bright colours, but these days you can get really good flashing lights that are good enough for daytime use so I’m not so fussy.

Obviously, just as I’m not representative of all car drivers, neither am I of cyclists, and because they are just like normal humans you get a range of awareness. Some are conscious of how visible they are, some are oblivious.

Scally cyclists in my area think its fun to hold on to the rear of the trailer when i’m going uphill!!

So tempted to slam on, but usually resist!

Cheers Roy.

You’d be amazed at the patterns of behaviour you see on a bike depending on vehicle. As I said, HGV drivers are hands down the safest and most considerate. When I see one approaching from behind I’ve no concerns. Buses used to be horrendous but they are starting to improve. Cars are a mixed bag, most people are great but about one in 20 or so are dangerous. Vans…nightmare. Builders vans and pickups are the worst. The other thing I’ve noticed is the smell of weed…usually builders vans and a daily occurrence now. This has only started to happen in the past few years.

With regards to kamikaze cyclists, I rarely see them round here (rural gloucestershire) but do see them in cities. I think a lot of the anti-cyclist stuff is generated in London, and to be fair when I’m there I see some really crap riding, really inconsiderate, unaware and dangerous.

I too try to be considerate and, if I know that cars aren’t going to be able to get past me within a reasonable period of time I’ll pull over. I do think that car drivers are quite thoughtless sometimes, for example when we ride in a bunch two abreast. They don’t realise that we are doing it to be in a compact group so that they can pass us more quickly and safely (rather than being strung out in a long line) . They also don’t realise why experienced cyclist stay out in the lane a bit.

Got to admit we did that as kids.

Cyclist Magnatom was a member on TruckNet.

Good to know its still the majority of lorryists take care around cyclists etc, and thanks for coming and saying, we don’t get much appreciation for our few good points.

Sorry to crash the lovey dovey party, but there’s as many idiot cylcists, as there’s idiot drivers. Why, oh why, do you insist on riding in the road, when there’s a cycle path next to the road…■■ Don’t give me the "the surface is to rough/bad/slippery, thats what we all have to put up with on our bit of the road.
“It might give me a puncture…” have you seen the potholes we have to content with?

You put on your pretend Tour the France clobber, put a plastic banana on your head, and in pursuit of your hobby, cause and obstruction on a road, that I need to use to try and deliver essential supplies. And earn a living.

Don’t get me started on " time trialling… :imp: " on public roads. ■■■■ off to a track for that. I’d like to see how the council reacts if I ask for the main road to be considered for a mini TT…

Just in the name of balance , we wouldn’t want to be seen as biased here now, do we…

Im a fellow cyclist. I bought a road bike and became a lycra lout when the gyms closed last year due to covid.
I have also done the cycling awareness course in Cambridge city centre a few years ago. That opened my eyes to the vulnerabilties of a cyclist. I ALWAYS give cyclists a wide bearth and only if its clear to go past.

However I live near Wissington sugar factory and when the beet harvest is on, the roads are bloody lethal with the bulkers on the road. They are by and far the worst HGV drivers when it comes to cyclists. Just last October I ended up on the grass verge twice in one day due those clowns. I decided to put the bike away untill the beet season finished in March.

Most cyclists can probably go faster than I can uphill.

As kids, we used to get within a couple of inches of the back of London Buses to slipstream. Looking back, it was bloody mental.

That is appalling. Solution is to fit a camera and submit it to police. If any road user is endangering you they need to be held to account. Many police forces have adopted a ‘close pass initiative’ although initially Cambridgeshire police refused in 2017. I believe they ran one in 2018, but there probably is a way to submit video evidence. Word will soon get round if dangerous drivers risk losing their licence.

Guy in my club has one. We had a woman nearly plough into us as we were turning right off a main road (we had been signalling for ages, but she attempted to overtake regardless). £200 and 3 points. It’s the only way they learn.

And there you go…
That didn’t last long did it? First few posts were ok then the true Lycra clad gimp shows his face. I hope it’s not long until the guy in your truly riveting club soon has his colon filmed by the first person he goes telling tales on

Well, what can I say. The riders at the back of group screamed warnings to the riders up front as car passed. Car doing about 50mph. She was a few inches away from riders. Without the shouts she would have most likely killed the guy in front. He’s a great guy. Two young kids.

I’m not going to get into a slanging match with you. You aren’t worth it.

There has been a trend for black ‘reflective’ cycle tops in the last few years. They look smart and work very well provided there is a light source ( headlights/ street lighting). However they are rubbish in daylight, particularly when there are lots of shadows.

Amen, halleluyah etc. I went out in my car for a lil Sunday drive on the local B-roads, what can I say - I gave up after only 10 mins as I ran into (not over…) too many cyclists and PEDESTRIANS lol…There are many walking paths and farm lanes all over but no, their £5000 bikes are too precious for that I guess…as for the pedestrians I don’t know, just tired of living I suppose. Going anywhere outside the motorways you need to stick to under 20mph as most public roads seems to have been turned into playgrounds for grown ups
