Coming back from coventry yesterday and there were delays on the m42 between the m6 link and junction 4, hard shoulder running was in operation and the only people using it were me and 3 cars 
the other 3 lanes were chock-a-bloc with stop start traffic, I was averaging about 40-45mph 
Just out of curiosity, what were you driving â– â– ? i think you may well have passed me

I was driving a red daf with a blue curtainsider.
Same thing happened to me on thursday, same place and an empty hard shoulder. 15 minute delay read the matrix. Well not for this boy. Straight past the lot of 'em. And it really helps that you don’t need to get back into lane 1 to get past J5. It was strange, the hard shoulder seemed to fill up behind me as i went by. Even though there’s huge letters saying USE HARD SHOULDER nobody wanted to til someone took the lead.
Its like the bus lanes in Hull. Nobody uses them outside hours of operation so I manage to jump queues dozens of cars long.

It’s a weekend thing. During the week it’s mostly regulars who know - at weekends there is lots of holiday traffic and they dont seem to believe the signs until someone shows them the way.

I use the 42 reguarly between M40 and A5, amazed that hard shoulder is nearly always empty, passed one of our other lorries at junction 5 one afternoon stuck in heavy traffic, straight onto h/s and leapfrogged every junction all the way to airport. Got back to yard 15 mins before other driver, so thankyou HA.

Makes me wonder if people used the HS and moved out of lane 2 just how much congestion would be left??

seems to be the same on the m25 at the mo.
when going anti clockwise, between j28 and j27, as the roadworks finish, and it opens up, to the new 4 lane section, you can get straight on the inside lane, and get a clear run, till, you get to the m11 split, and get in the correct lane you need, whilst most of the cars, appear glued to lanes 3 and 4
