ELKES biscuits
SouthWest Lancs Farmers ORMSKIRK
This was 1 of 2 of these BMC made to be under 3 ton unladen and came in at tons 2 -19-3 It was so that myself and another guy who were 18 years old could drive them . You needed to be over 21 yrs for over 3 ton tare weight… We carried animal feeds an hay & Straw around 100 mile area.
I am surprised that Elkes had a Trader.I didn’t know that and being a Uttoxeter bloke I feel ashamed of myself. They had a nice fleet of motors and very different with lovely sign writing. They had an Ambulance which I wanted to look at and I did as it took me to Hartshill hospital when I had to go back as a warranty job after having my tonsils out. There is a restored Thornycroft about which looks good but a pity the colours and signwriting as we think they should be.I hope whoever owns it doesn’t mind me saying that as it is I’m sure a big job to restore a vehicle.

ELKES had 5 Thames traders at Burscough factory in Lancs .This factory used to be Elkes@Fox biscuits until they split in about 1962 .I think the Cardiff factory also had some Traders .Utoxeter had traders that were coach built by a firm in Longton S-O-T. Along with many bedfords of different kinds the latest being TKs. do you remember Eddie Povey who drove for ELKES then bought a 6 wheel trader for himself and went on contract to move product between Utoxeter and Burscough daily.he later changed to a 6 wheel ERF. We did a lot of imoving of product between factories and to depots in Colebrook London …Ely Cambridge . Aycliffe Darlington plus Lewis’s shops who sold some 2 to3 thousand tins a week in some shops and Littlwoods shops throughout the country.the Thorneycroft you mention is pictured somewhere on this site.Burscough depot also had a couple of Coach built COMMER vans in the livery you probably remember they were like being in a rowing boat going over waves they rocked back and forth so much but nice to drive all the same.

I remember the E.R.F.Povey is a well known Uttoxeter name and I do know quite a few of them.Stan who worked at Fryers and Povey’s the farmers in Doveridge.Very straight people. You may remember the entrance to the Uttoxeter factory by the Union Inn.I well remember the millers lorries bringing flour and also some steamers.Elkes of course were a very respected Uttoxeter family in fact Alan Elkes lives in Doveridge. There are some photos of their fleet it might be in the book The history of Uttoxeter.I’ll check that out.I remember they had a Thorneycroft tanker, probably more.
