test on monday

Hi guys got my class 1 test on Monday using a wag and drag. Only thing I am having doubts with for the test is the un-coupling/ coupling procedure, i.e. remembering everything. Un-coupling is ok using BLANK Brake Legs Ancillaries Numberplate Kingpin (pin) park at side of trailer tell examiner that I would drop T-bar if I was leaving yard and then check trailer brake. The coupling up I wondered if anyone had worked out a word to use so nothing is missed out.
Pretty sure I’ll remember but would be handy if there was something to help.
Have looked on the coupling procedure mentioned on here some use black although blank works for me. I did notice that someone mentioned removing the key, we haven’t done this at all in practice and have left the key in when leaving the vehicle, alarm bells are ringing now, should i remove the key when I have finished my un-coupling and parked next to trailer, and should I remove key when reversed up to trailer and inspecting it. Don’t want to miss anything, my instructor didn’t even mention checking the hose’s condition before attaching which I noticed on here too.

On the artic we use the the same word in reverse KNALB but I have never done W&D

For security and safety it is best to remove the keys - if you use gloves, then just remember ‘KEYS & GLOVES’ - works for my trainees

I’ve never heard of an examiner asking about the hose or electrical lead condition but it would not hurt if you just gave them a quick look-over as you attach each one

Hey Fox

Make sure you dont forget to reset the pin, before you go coupling up.

Some monkey down the test centre didnt and he was the ■■■■■■■ ages trying to re couple until the examiner stopped the test

Foxstein, did my test in a Wag ‘n’ Drag.
Here’s a copy of the procedure my trainer gave me.

RIGID AND DRAWBAR TRAILER

UNCOUPLING

1 Secure trailer parking brake

2 Lower trailer leg, make sure drawbar is high enough to trigger pin

3 Disconnect air lines and electrical connections, secure on drawbar

4 Pull up button and lift pin

5 Remount, start engine and drive forward observing the trailer, park beside trailer

6 Apply tractor parking brake, switch off engine, dismount and close door

7 Advise examiner that you would now remove the registration plate and that the uncoupling procedure is now complete.

COUPLING

1 CHECK THE TRAILER BRAKE

2 Line up vehicle with trailer stopping just short of pin

3 Re set pin

4 Check trailer draw bar height matches up with VBG coupling

5 Remount, start engine, reverse tractor on to trailer

6 Engage 2nd.gear and attempt to drive forward twice

7 Ensure locking lever is pointing down (walk round to nearside to check)

8 Connect air lines and electrical connections

9 Wind up leg, secure handle

10 Release trailer parking brake

11 Check tyres for cuts, bulges, tread and foreign bodies in or between them, check cargo door and curtain straps

12 Advise the examiner that you would now replace trailer registration plate

13 Ask the examiner to stand at the rear of the trailer where you can see him in the driver’s mirror to assist in checking the electrics advising him that you will then drive forward to test brakes.

Good luck mate, early night on Sunday night and Beer’s on Monday night!

Well guys passed with 2 minors, chuffed or what!!!
Been bricking it all weekend but feel better now. Had a lady examiner and she was very chatty and instantly felt more relaxed, we chatted most of way round.
I’m one of the lucky few who got the free Qualitas artic course and passed, oh well back to the day job tomorrow, one day I might get to use my cat C, was a year ago I first started to go for it and circumstances have changed now, might do a bit of Saturday driving for a mate to keep my hand in. [/b]
