Tesla truck put on indefinite hold

Can’t post the article but it basically says that because of lack of funds in building the factory and technical problems with the truck, it has been put on indefinite hold.
Also the CEO says that this truck would only ever be good for local work, not long haul.

Amazing that they are still taking reservations… tesla.com/semi

Think facebook might have lied to you. This is the guy that can afford to put things into space. They can put a truck together if they want. And I think they will. It will be crap at first but eventually, it will get improved to the point where it’s workable. A bit like electric cars.

Maybe you’re right, IDK, but there are quite a few news reports out here saying the same thing.

Where are they? All the reports I can see talk about big companies placing orders and DHL saying they think this could save them a fortune.

We all know first generation tech is a bit dodgy. These trucks will have loads of problems. And first generation drivers of them will want to murder Mr Musk. But a couple of cycles later and they will be getting pretty good. I would love to drive one of the Tesla trucks when they come out. As I’m sure most on here would if they are totally honest with themselves.

Tesla refuse to say what the unladen weight is and without knowing that a company can’t decide whether its usable or not. Musk also stated in the Q1 earnings call that companies contacting him are doing so speculatively, not because they’re actually selling them.

The answer was provided during the Q&A portion of the Q1 earnings call. Here is an enlightening exchange between CNBC’s Phil LeBeau and Musk:

Phil LeBeau - CNBC LLC

With the Tesla Semi, how many reservations do you guys now have approximately? And where are you in the process as far as the development and the rollout of the first model in terms of timeline, when you guys expect that to happen, et cetera?

Elon Reeve Musk - Tesla, Inc.

I actually don’t know how many reservations we have for the Semi. About 2,000? Okay. I mean, we haven’t really tried to sell the Semi. It’s not like there’s like an ongoing sales effort, so sales – orders for Semi are like opportunistic, really companies approaching us. Yeah, it’s not something we really think about much.

:unamused: Carryfast taking credit for a Tesla (allegedly) dropping the semi is a new fantasy land height even for him    Has Musk got you on speed dial?

CEO states its only good for short haul, well theres a surprise. And most likely only good for carrying polystyrene with a net of 8t but a gross with batteries around 20t…(probably)…

No.But some say his investors have been taking great interest in the Trucknet discussions. :smiling_imp:

What a massive surprise. :smiling_imp:

Range is a major factor and an electro truck needs several hundred miles between charges. They also need to consider charging time since a lot of trucks run day and night. Trampers have no chance of getting an electric truck!
If electric cars are unsuitable for some people (no way of charging them) then those same issues will be greater for hauliers. They have a long way to go before they will be practical for any company that goes beyond local deliveries

Excellent video. Thanks.

Good comment about 16min 45: We have politicians, making decisions who are more influenced by lobbyists, of various colours and persuasions, than by reason, logic and critical thinking. We are governed by people who can sometimes quote from the classics and make stirring speeches and get elected, but are virtually innumerate! Applicable to so many fields, but let`s not get off topic.

Anyway, Id love to play with a Tesla car, but doubt they are the ultimate solution, but would argue they are a useful step on the road to a better product. Electric truck? Drivers point of view? Gotta be a good craic to have a go! Id love to drive one. Business/practiclity? Not there yet, by a long way.
I cant see why Tesla (apart from their assertion that they only "do" pure electric?) wont use a hybrid form of propulsion? That is, use Tesla battery and electronic know-how in energy recuperation. A truck with hydrocarbon engine, as well as as batteries charged at point of departure, and recharged during braking and hill descents could be more practical than a pure battery truck, surely?

He knows his stuff aswell.

Musk maybe able to afford to put things in space but given his company’s current financial position that probably wasn’t the best use of his funds. The share price has tanked in the last few weeks and estimates are that unless he can get his latest electric car into mass production in the very near future the money will run out in about 3 months.

Nikola are doing much better as they’ve an order for 800 trucks to be delivered to Budwiser 2020. :sunglasses:

Not quite…
“Up to 800 trucks” and “Nikola says it will start delivering the trucks to the beer distributor in 2020, and that it will show off a final production version of the truck at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show.”

So, although Nikola do seem to be nearer a usable electric hybrid truck than Tesla are to pure battery/electric one they aren`t there yet.
