Tesla entering truck market

ft.com/content/6d18e8e0-279 … fbc18b6535

Tesla shares revved higher on Thursday after Elon Musk tweeted that the automaker would unveil its semi truck in September.

The Palo Alto-based company, which recently overtook General Motors as the most valuable auto company in the US, saw its shares perk up nearly 2 per cent to $302.68 after Mr Musk tweeted: “Tesla semi truck unveil set for September. Team has done an amazing job. Seriously next level.”

Mr Musk first announced Tesla would be expanding into trucks back in July as part two of his masterplan for the company. At the time he said, “in addition to consumer vehicles, there are two other types of electric vehicle needed: heavy-duty trucks and high passenger-density urban transport” and that both of those were in development and would be unveiled this year.

The news comes even as investors anticipate the arrival of Tesla’s mass market Model 3 vehicle in July. The electric automaker has, however, previously been hamstrung by production constraints and its falcon-winged Model 3 vehicle launched after a 2-year delay in 2015.

I hope it comes with Tang/Boat mode! :grimacing:

He made the electric car cool. He’s as close as we’ll get to a real life Tony Stark.

He’s a clever guy, no denying that…

And he’s made the electric car cool with willy waving 0-60 figures of 2.4 seconds!
Now he needs to increase the range, so consumers feel the range of the vehicle is well beyond expected needs.
Merc are currently trialing a truck that I think has a 200k range, and that’s currently little use to man or beast…
It is moving in the right direction, but I think we need figures more like 600k on a charge.

Look back 5 years or so, electric cars were a joke. Something those eco tools could brag about driving around London in a plastic go-kart with the range of your average container driver on a push bike. Now we have an electric car that looks like a supercar, goes like a supercar and costs as such but it has a range of 400 miles. Thats about the same as your average 2000 esk saloon car. I wouldn’t think for a second that Tesla aren’t cooking up something special with their battery technology to extend the range. They are pretty much the sole driving force pushing battery tech forward.

This is the same man who also has a company that ferries cargo up to the International freaking Space Station as well as landing a rocket on a platform floating in the middle of the dam ocean!

He’s fingers in all pies as he’s also big in solar, so I wonder how long before the trailers are fitted with panels?

“Ah great, sling more coal onto the fire Mr Drax!”

“But sir, we have Mr Nuclear too”?

“Ah yes, ask those hill billies at Selafield to keep those murky fish ponds open, we’ll need a few acres to put those knackered rods into”

“But Sir, we still don’t know what to do with that stuff yet?”

Tomorrow’s problem my boy, tomorrow’s problem. A long as Mr and Misses ■■■■ knocker have fume free leafy streets they feel green. And London feels green. And Europe feels green! And everyone can wet their pants with how wonderous and enlightened they are. And we make it happen! Whilst you’re about it, ring up those green tarts at the wind farms and get them to spank a few more blades round won’t you? Be a good boy and just to tick the box, also ring up the deranged idealists at the mirror farm."

“What, the solar energy plant and the wind farms? But sir, they’re bug eyed idealists living in a fantasy of unattainable solutions mismatching with reality of demand!”

“Ha ha, I know my boy, I know. But Mr and misses ■■■■ knocker love them. Gives em what they want. That warm rosey glow whilst reading the FT”

“Right you are sir. I’ll tell Drax to lay on gen set 4”

“Yes and we’ll need a few more amps on to cover the electric trains delivering the coal. So set a few more coal trains on won’t you. Good lad”

He died nearly 75 years ago nothing to do with cars. in fact was made a bit of a fool of he was pushing AC when the money was on DC. now a firm making cars running Dc bearing his name must be a bit of an insult when AC was the way forward after all

I see him more as a passionate inventor, who maybe didn’t have the business acumen of Elon Musk.
And who’s to say they wouldn’t have got on, as both are engineers and technically gifted.
Plus he might appreciate that he’s defined his place in history! :sunglasses:

600klicks on a charge might be fine for puddle jumpers, you’ll need a bit more than that for the rest of us.

For example, I can get easily more than 1500ks from one ‘charge’ and it takes me less than 10 minutes. Leccy needs to beat that in my opinion for it to be viable.

If it’s going to be like the Tesla cars, it’ll be a bit of a white elephant. Not saying the cars are, bear with me on this one.

The technology and refinement will command a huge price tag, just as their cars and all electric vehicles do. Have you seen the price of a Nissan Leaf ffs :unamused:

The charging stations will be so few and far between, and so in demand I can’t see it being viable. If they make it in the ilk of a long distance tractor, unless it has a 4K range motor it’ll miss its target audience. The tech will only be any good for the likes of Tesco etc who have the truck back every day and can have a hundred charging points. And even then it’ll be no good, as their kit doesn’t sit still long enough to take a charge.

Could you imagine robroy getting one? And being forced into an msa every night to use a charging station :open_mouth:

A Dutch friend of mine has has a Tesla for what, three or so years. He loves it. Its fast, a ■■■■■ magnet, and he’s been as far north as the polar circle. He likes that he can go for a coffee when it has a 20 minute recharge every couple of hours. When I asked him how much coffee he’d be drinking if there where two or three Tesla in front of him, needing a ‘quick’ 20 minute recharge, he scratched his beard, and went “aahh”…

A big step forward just like the Nikola1.

Tesla have had the forsight to build there own charging station many near park and rides they really have thought it thru better than other manufacturers who have relied on government to build them

You lads can whine on about the power coming from fossil fuels or nuclear as much as you like the fact remains that electric cars are still vastly cleaner than petrol and diesel power plants in every vehicle. That’s not to say I’m an electric car fan, I actually think it’s a stop gap, a bit of a dead end, something superior will be along to make them redundant

Watched a BBC ■■■■■ about it. He was putting forward ac as it could travel long distances easily and his oppo in NYC (maybe Eddison can’t remember p) wanted dc as the network. This other bloke wanted dc booster stations on every block with wires hanging everywhere. What a nob. Tesla was unrecognised and died in poverty in the New Yorker hotel and NYC went onto use his idea of AC for distribution that is used now.

I think it was Edison yes. Tesla makes an appearance in The Prestige, memorably played by David Bowie

I agree that 600k won’t see electric trucks sweeping the market, just finding their place for day workers.
Yes charging will be an issue, but for all I know they might go for modular power packs that a forkie clips in, and you exchange them at services maybe. I don’t know, I just think 600k is the tipping point for them making an appearance…

Most of the big manufacturers have the next thing to propell cars and trucks already but while there is a reasonably low cost alternative ( fossil fuels) out there they have no incentive to show there hand remember fuel isn’t expensive everywhere
