An 18 months ban is not long enough in my opinion.
Sent from my mobile.
wow. He must’ve tampered with the autopilot system too, it has hand sensors that if you let go of the wheel for more than 5 seconds the autopilot disconnects IIRC.
Normal cars have had a seatbelt check for years when spmeone is sitting there, so surely a Tesla should do it in reverse before allowing auto pilot. Someone is always going to be stupid enough to do this.
At least an idiot with too much money and no brains has been removed temporarily but agree not enough, should be a 10 year ban plus extended driving retest and 6 months wages fine. (Also applies to other stupid driving crimes).
Cannot see how this is not classed as Dangerous Driving ?

Cos he wasn’t driving LOL
A statement provided by a Tesla engineer said the autopilot was intended to provide assistance to a “fully-attentive driver”, the court heard.
So what is the point of autonomy? Some of these fancy toys on vehicles are more distracting then a mobile phone or sending a text message.
I still have to press buttons, scroll up and down the screen and use voice controls to answer a voicemail on the car

If this ■■■■ was driving a lorry, he’d probably be eating porridge for breakfast for a while.

The driver (for want of a better word) pleaded guilty to dangerous driving.
Bhavesh Patel, 39, of Alfreton Road, Nottingham, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving at St Albans Crown Court

I believe since Tesla introduced the system to check the driver was holding the wheel some drivers have found a way of getting round it by putting something on the steering wheel.
I think they now looking at a system that tracks the drivers eye movements to see if they’re paying attention.
I wonder how they would check the driver’s eye movements if he is sitting in the passenger seat…?
Or wearing mirrored sunglasses?

That’s the point, if he’s not sitting in the driver seat the car won’t allow him to use the self driving mode.
As for mirrored sunglasses, like I said its work in progress, to try and stay one step ahead of a certain breed of Tesla owner who has been totally taken in by the Tesla self driving hype, but has completely ignored the warnings over the limitations of a level 2 autonomous driving system.

Apparently it does - hence the current discussion…

No it doesn’t as Tesla doesn’t use that system, but introduced a system that checks that the drivers has their hands on the wheel after the fatal crash a couple of year ago, however it appears that some drivers have found a way of overriding this feature and fooling the car into thinking they have thier hands on the steering wheel.
