Tesco to reopen Fenny Lock distribution centre

Tesco is to reopen its Fenny Lock distribution centre at Milton Keynes in May.
The centre was closed in March 2011, after being replaced by a 940,000 sq ft distribution centre in Daventry’s international rail freight terminal, when it was no longer able to cope with the volume of products that it was required to stock.
The change of location from Fenny Lock to Daventry also helped Tesco’s drive to produce zero carbon by 2050 as the Daventry site was able to handle eight trains a day, taking almost 100,000 lorry journeys off the roads each year.
During the 2011 closure, 1,000 employees’ jobs were on the line. But now the company has announced a U-turn with the reopening of the site and the creation of 300 jobs.
A Tesco spokesman said: “Following a review of our online distribution network, Tesco announced plans to reopen its Fenny Lock site in Milton Keynes.
“The move will enable us to deliver a better service for customers as our online business grows.”
Part of the business currently operated from the Daventry site will move to Fenny Lock.
Tesco is working with USDAW to support affected employees through the move. It hopes to offer them all alternative roles within the clothing and grocery distribution centres at either Daventry or Fenny Lock.
