Tesco strike part 2

Noremac:
The paid breaks is good of course.

only if you want to be dictated to about where and when you have your break.

Can’t see any other possible reasoning for such a deal. The overall shift length is the same and over time kicks in at the same time as before.
Breaks are now on the firm’s time so the firm can say when and where and how they are taken.
As opposed to the union saying that normal shift length reduces and the over time threshold kicks in earlier accordingly.
If not why not just demand a higher hourly rate on the normal time.

Sorry I don’t really understand the comment. The breaks weren’t paid before and are going to be paid with no other changes. If there is something else you know, please share.

Noremac:
The paid breaks is good of course. However, it does raise the question why it was okay for a driver to be taking breaks here there and everywhere, sometimes at night, without proper facilities and not getting paid for it for all the years that went before. The more cynical among us may say, reality is, it is a way of giving drivers a pay increase without giving the same benefit to the warehouse.

Warehouse shouldn’t even be within the same wage structure and wage negotiations as drivers.
If it is it’s more likely to be that warehouse and shop staff are already under such a regime.
Which might explain why I’ve over heard shop staff having to ask permission of their supervisors before being allowed to go on break numerous times.
Paid break was always the reserve of salaried staff not hourly paid. That’s why their hours were always based on 8 hours = 9-5.

payed breaks gives management more control over where and when you have a break.
unpaid they have no say.

I don’t even know if we get a meal allowance

Theres a thing on my payslip that says “driver premium” which is about £20 every pay check, is that it?

Yeah that’s it, you won’t get rich off it lol

I just put that into the SAYE (and a bit more) plan every month.

Management will not be telling drivers where and when they can take a break. Union will not allow it and by sticking together as a union we got a better deal so it ain’t going to happen.

^ The naivety of both members and union leadership is staggering in that regard.
If not what is the point of the deal on the employers’ side why not just increase the standard hourly rate.

The unions ‘allow’ it for shop staff at least.
Why not just demand the equivalent increase on the hourly rate instead.

There won’t be any dictating of when & where breaks are taken, where I work, there’s hundreds of drivers, how are they supposed to tell hundreds of drivers when & where to have a break??

Managers won’t be bothered, they’re not going to give themselves anymore unnecessary work.

Incorrect tosco can and do dictate where and when to take your break esp after a run that’s taken less than 6 hours

Exactly. Breaks from driving are for road safety so if I’m tired and need a break I will take one. Those who let managers dictate when a break can be taken need to grow a pair.

Well, judging by what has been posted, the drivers are not separated from the warehouse in terms of any pay deal and indeed any pay deal would be the same percentage. Giving drivers paid breaks is a way of differentiating the pay. If Tosco increased the pay of the drivers to the market rate it would also involve increasing the warehouse pay by the same proportion. I don’t think it represents a sea change in attitude to breaks, it is just a means to an end.

Also another “driver retention bonus” for 3months £50gross/week starting think Feb too■■?
Not bad THREE pay increases in the same month!!!

Do you work for Tesco? Not seen the new retention bonus myself yet…

I shall be furiously scouring my notice board later

I haven’t heard of any new retention bonus either.

Decent that if it’s being put in across the board and not at selected DCs. Probably be paid on 27th May so that’s a pay date the treasury will love as that’s also performance bonus payment day…
