i have my assesment on tues so i will find out exactly what is required of me

How did you get on?

Got offered a job at Daventry frozen this morning. One I’m mulling over currently…

what about RM mate?

I’ve got that interview and assessment at 7am tomorrow. Hoping they’re offering on the spot so I can make a choice.

On one hand having got to this stage I’m guessing as long as I don’t drop a clanger (or a trailer on its knees  ) I’m safe for a start at RM.

On the other… Tesco have offered me the shifts that would basically stop any need for childcare after school so I’d save on fees for that.

good luck

nice to have the choice mate, both decent outfits and one already tailored to your lifestyle.

Got all the way through the elimination style process with Royal Mail. Now it’s waiting for an email. Got a good feeling from interview but too many Pertemps Royal Mail hi viz tabards involved so guessing all of those will be ahead of me.

from what i’ve read lately mate rm seem to be on a recruitment drive at the mo so i think you’ll be ok…
which one you going for drift or atherstone, the ex bhs depot?.

It will be DIRFT. For some reason they just held everything at Atherstone.

ah sorry its dirft, well you’ll be better off closer to home cause as you know the a5 at certain times can be a nightmare down to the longshoot etc… good luck mate i’m sure you’ll be ok as i think you’ve done your apprenticeship…

From your other thread it looks like you’ve got a start at Snodland. You’ll discover that every load out is three loads: one to deliver to store(s), recycling back to Holborough and cages back to the RDC. Keep an eye on your WTD 6 hrs you can get close to it with delays at Holborough and refuelling and parking at Snodland. Make sure that you are shown how to load and secure recycling in cages and groups of empty cages, because they will move if you don’t do it properly - it has burst through the shutter in the past. I’ve no idea who is dishing out the work these days but Trigger was an a’hole and Nevil was a diamond. Most of the old Hays’ men will have retired by now, but there was a bit of a cliquey atmosphere at times. The hygiene state of the inside of the fridges will shock you.

yes i start today. When i went for my induction i was shown the rough idea of what i will be doing. I did ask if they used load bars for the cages and was told no its straps in an x pattern. He did show me the cages and told me that you can get three single cages across and 4 narrow ones. I am concirned about the cages as apparently they dont have brakes. Apparently the lorry is checked before it is sealed so i plan on copying how it is loaded (hopefuly correctly).

The two people i was introduced to in the office were two ladys but cant remember thier names.

It is going to be a steep learning curve wishe me luck

Good luck…

coop, pullin’ for ya mate.

You got this!

Obviously things will have changed ; I don’t recall getting any cages 4 across. I would load four siders 2 across the body, with one along, next row change the position of the one along and repeat (left, right, middle) strapping every row. Two siders sometimes you could get all three across the body again strapping every row. Bundles of empty cages always across the body never along strapping every three rows. Potato shippers across the body, same with milk cages if they now use them, soft drink dollies go across. Beware of the bulkheads, they are heavy and get abuse, make sure they are fastened UP properly, it is nor funny being polaxed by one of them. Load was usually frozen at the front, and chilled on the back meaning you had to dig out the frozen. RSU from 1st shop went on the back and reorganise by losing one per row if possible, stores don’t like unloading it but you must have room to work safely. Some of the ambient cages were covered in a shroud which you had to fold up in the back of the vehicle and return to the RSU in a cage.

Since you will often be working on a slope level the suspension. Some shops have ramps to level the vehicle sideways. Push only cages one- at- a- time. One day a cage will get away from you, don’t do anything heroic, shout and let it go if necessary. The store managers will be full of hurry up driver, hurry up, don’t be bullied.

Be careful on garage forecourts watch for idiot drivers. The shop will provide a banksman. The garage should stop dispensing from any pump which can’t be seen from the cash till. That is nothing to do with you but expect to be told to move - not without a banksman if reversing. Very, very rarely you may end up requiring a break at a garage. That will start an argument: " Tesco law says you can’t". UK law says you must not exceed your limits so leaving the site with uncertain parking available prevents you. Just ring Snodland.

I could add to this - put an extra line or two of criss-cross straps so any bursting open of the last line of strapped tight cages on back - doesn’t get to roll and build up speed to burst through that shutter, nor the open door come to that…

Let’s see if we can do better than our American cousins on our first day in yard… :stuck_out_tongue:

Did they pass you, and book you in for your first shift then and there, or make you wait a few days?

i called the agency when i got home from the induction and pretty much told them when i wanted to start and what days i wanted to work. However i did get a text yesterday asking me to start 30min earlier.

Just remember if you still have more than one store not to take too many empties off the first/second store.

The general rule of thumb is if your first store is a delivery of 8 cages you only take 8 empties off of them max. But its up to you really. More empties you take off of the first store the more ■■■■■■■ about you have to do to get to your next job.
