Telling Lies

You could try Reed Boardall they take on newbs.I think that we just have to accept that the labour market is flooded at the moment. Are there any operators where they have both class 2 and class 1 trucks. As has been said the pay differential isnt much for doing the bendies.Steer well clear of fraudulent activities with your licence, its just not worth it.

Was the same for me not so long ago best thing to do is call in to all the places in your area and then keep going back again and again. Eventually their will be an opening somewhere but don’t give up whatever you do.

You will find September to December, the 2 year rule gets swept under the carpet as agencies struggle for drivers due to the higher demand at this time of year.

That’s kinda how I got into the industry, in the busy periods the agencies are only interested in the C+E on your licence. I had my Class 1 for nearly 5 years before I used it, even with 7 years PCV driving, 7 months PCV Driving instruction and Driver training under my belt no one would touch me… Along came summer holiday time and got a few weeks worth of shifts, from there things just got better :stuck_out_tongue:

thx kiwitaff but it hasnt arrived :unamused:

again…

Of course there are some who luck into a job, but for most of us it’s takes time to get that first job without experience, and not just in haulage. It was true 20 odd years ago when I was looking and still seems to be the case.

Keep knocking on doors, go back and see companies you’ve already visited and if you haven’t, go a see the a few small companies and try and talk to the owner, never know your face might fit.

You don’t need references from the agency - If you’ve worked for one, that say, sent you in with half a dozen different clients… Should they later go under, then someone else will pick up that work, and you can then tell the new team that "I’ve already been working for all your clients for the past 2 years, bits here and there.

You’ll find that’ll do them.

THe insurance thing? - I can’t see anyone sept-dec suddenly deciding to pay ramped-up premiums for taking on those without the so-called required experience… More likely, they’ll just take 'em and hope they are not going to smash the kit up.

I wonder how many agencies go bust because the client sues them for damage to their yard kit, and it turns out there never was any actual insurance in place for such cover?

When I applied to agencies 3 years back, I had some wanting me to have worked for their clients before, some wanting me to have ‘worked continuously since leaving full time employment’ (wtf? Paradox!) and some who didn’t want me signing up to any other agencies.

To all, I’ve given the standard reply “If you want me, phone me. If you don’t, - don’t.”
The first Jan-Feb was hard, because I’d not built up any holiday pot - but it’s got better as time has gone on. Those agencies that thought they could take the ■■■■, treating me as if I was some kind of convict on a halfway house programme just got left behind when I merely moved to whoever gave me the most work.

I’ve been exclusively one agency for just under a year now, the last shift having been done for someone else last June.

Ask the agency before signing up if the work they get from their clients is “just in time cover” or “scheduled leave cover”. Any hesitation in the reply means it’ll almost all be the former, which consists of last minute calls all the time. Not good. Work for an agency that covers full timers on holiday instead. That way you’ll get blocks of full weeks rather than just some idiot who’s thrown a sickie on cup final day, or whatever…

Hi mate, have you tried ADR agency? They are always desperate for drivers at Co-op Lea green,St.Helens.I did my class 1 with their own driving school and was straight out on the road after I passed.I think they do a scheme where you pay for a 3day training/assessment.
Money not to bad and should be plenty of work this time of year. You will get plenty of experience getting into tight stores as well.
Get 6months in there and you shouldn’t have a problem getting work elsewhere.

Go on the agency, even if you work half the hours, you should be there about’s, worst case. I know some of the agency are gob ■■■■■■ but I’m sure some are alright.

That or just blag you’ve got 2 years exp till you pitch up at a chap’s who doesn’t check when you passed, just looks at the entitlemen,t as you say you know what you’re about.
