Just spoke to a mate of mine, he works for a well established North East tanker company (DieselDave will be familiar with them )
Anyway, he told me that their office bods want the drivers to download their digi cards on a daily basis from now on. Problems for trampers you may think⦠Wrong, apparently they are to (at shift end) insert their cards into the slot in the Fleetboard machine and this will download the info.
Apparently office staff with smartphones and the access codes can view individual driver data at will. Obviously this means that when driver āAā says he hasnāt got the hours to do a certain job, planner āBā then checks his phone and tells him he has X hours left, so crack on!
Obviously this isnāt in any way shape or form illegal, but it certainly seems that Big Brother is indeed watching!
peirre:
IF the driver has nothing to hide, what have they got to loose?
Its only drivers who falsify their hours who will get caught
That wasnāt really the thrust of my post tbh Pierre, what Iām amazed about is that the technology exists to do this in the first place.
Mind you Iām someone who is convinced that in a hundred years teachers will be saying to their classes ācan you believe that the fools in the 20th century actually used to microwave food!ā
The technology to remotely download both cards and VUās has been around for a fair while now.
I believe one tracking & analysis company are integrating the 2 so that not only can you track the vehicles you will be able to access their tacho data as well. Also, any infringements can be āgeo taggedā so that you can see exactly where the vehicle was at the time.
The coach company i was recently working for were planning to install this without telling the driversā¦
Tachodisc just sent me their latest catalogue through the post and there is indeed a productā¦their reference DIGIDL which looks like what you might be talking about.
Yours for 295 of your English pounds.
Most people these days walk and drive around with their smartphones switched on all the time. Your phone tracks where you are every minute so it is no surprise that an employer can use the same technology to track their expensive trucks.

This technology is available at the moment,
I dont know what the legalities are regarding letting the staff know, I would presume there has to be somekind of information given within an employment contract.
In three years digital tachograph units will have GPS in them, and then there no were you are and what time you were there,( and the boss will no your pulling the wool over is eyes when you say your in traffic, but actually having a cheeky cuppa or KFC) expected 2016 and then the card could be incorporated into the drivers licence.

Correct me if Iām wrong but as far as Iām aware the GPS will only be used to record the start and finish places.
Though I reckon itās only a matter of time before GPS is being used in the digital tachograph to record a lot more than start and finish places.
thatās what i thought till iI read this
Location recording by satellite positioning system will allow replacing manual recording by automated ones. It will save Ć¢ā¬349 million per year for road transport undertakings and their drivers. It allows for better monitoring and provides important information for organising the logistics chain.
Remote communication that increases efficiency of roadside checks that can be targeted on those vehicles which are more likely to be in breach of the legislation. As complying drivers will be stopped less frequently, a reduction of administrative burden by Ć¢ā¬34.5 million per year can be achieved.
Specific interface to allow for an integration into intelligent transport systems, while respecting the applicable legislation on data protection.
Higher standards for workshops entrusted to install and calibrate the tachograph will reduce fraud and manipulation.
Merging the driving licence with the driver card to be used with the digital tachograph. This will reduce the administrative burden on drivers by Ć¢ā¬100 million per year. It will also reduce fraudulent use of driver cards, which today are too easily handed over to other drivers.
Continuous update of the tachograph specifications in order to ensure that a high level of security is maintained and that opportunities for fraud and manipulation are reduced
I have that tech already at 3663 in our new Scaniaās there is a button next to the tacho unit that flashes when the unit is being downloaded from the depot.
Nothing to hide so donāt bother me, I have to press the switch to agree the download otherwise it canāt be done.
