Technical problem Scania P230

Not sure I’m posting in right area but here goes .

I have a 2005 p230 problem. Temp gauge doesn’t work but works in the instrument check. Mechanics that we use says the fan hub is gone . Are these really important? Amber flashing warning light.

Kettle is in the wrong place.

The main problem with your vehicle is as follows;

Rigid.

Yes the fan hub is important. When its faulty one of two things will happen:

  1. the cooling fan won’t fully engage and spin at full speed when the engine is hot, or

  2. its locked up and its spinning full tilt all the time so the engine runs stone cold.

  3. sounds like what yours is doing. It won’t do any damage but it’ll use more fuel and you’ll wish you’d fixed it when October arrives and you’re having to use the cab heater to keep warm.

Only getting back to this now. Just got a new one fitted at a big cost. Warning light is off now. Nice to see it not flashing, however temperature gauge is not budging and cab is luke warm a free a long drive.

What other problem could I have? Temp gauge does work in a full instrument check.

any iv driven the engine coolant was all sludged up. reckon its normal to go that way unless proper stuff added to stop internal rusting.

Ignoring the temperature gauge, the heater should be getting warm.

Thermostat could be stuck open or if its had the problem you first posted since you bought it there may not even be one at all if the previous owner has removed it to stop overheating. Easy to check yourself. Remove from the engine. If its open when you take it out of the stone cold engine its buggered. Place in a jug of boiling hot water and see if it moves (takes a minute or so, not instant). If it doesn’t its buggered. They’re a few quid for a new one.

Always had to manually adjust the heater from under the grill when it started getting chilly…the cable may be stretched and isn’t operating properly or the temp gubbins may be knackered…open the grill and iirc, you can see a small (2") plastic lever with a cable just poking out the end…this is connected to the temp dial on the dash… Can’t remember if it’s pull right out or push right back but should be ok as a temp fix. Sorry for the ■■■■ poor description…had a couple of Shandy Bass tonight!

[emoji23] [emoji23] [emoji23] That’s exactly how I had to operate the heater on an ERF EC11 I used to drive. Cable was snapped on it.

does sound very much like a stuck open thermostat. had the fan hub definitely failed ? (I’m always very suspicious of workshops just replacing stuff at great expenses) could it have just been a stuck open thermostat from the very beginning? what warning light was flashing?

Cheers for replys. Yes , engine management light kept flashing. Well I have to trust the workshop. They are indi Scania specialists who I was recommended to go to. He also mentioned there was a repair to do on the loom also. Fan hub was 900.

I will buzz them this week. Yes the hot/cold knob is very stiff so I will flip the grill and see if I can adjust the heat manually . Any body have a pic on where the thermostat is located?

As a rule of thumb it’ll be at the end of the top radiator hose, usually the engine end. Looking at some pictures of the engine it looks like its on the drivers side above the fuel filter housing and sat behind the big plastic pipe coming from the turbo so that’ll need removing.

Think this is the bit you want, £21.75 plus £3,75 for a gasket.

Can you tell me what difference will it make if it is gone. Like with a new fan hub fitted is it using more fuel also if the thermostat is gone.

What is its function?

If the fan hub had been locked on permanently then it would have been using a little more fuel, but it shouldn’t have been over cooling the engine. The engine temperature is controlled by the thermostat, when the temp rises above a set level within the core of the engine (about 80c) then the thermostat opens a little and allows some of the water to flow through the radiator to cool. The danger of the thermostat being open all the time is all of the water is flowing through the radiator all of the time, the engine will never reach its correct running temperature, this may affect mpg a little, but the main danger is increased engine wear.

:arrow_right: When warm Air comes out then is enough Water in Cooler. But,if after 20 Miles still comes cold Air then by sure its short.

So I got a new thermostat fitted and temperature gauge is now going up after a while of driving. It looks like it sits on 80 degrees.

Thats about right. Make sure you’ve got plenty of antifreeze in so we don’t have you coming back asking why you’ve got mayo in your engine.

I wonder if there was anything wrong with the cooling fan that they replaced at great cost … seems a bit of a coincidence that the fan would fail and the thermostat at the same time. I never trust fitters they have a habit of just replacing stuff with little justification.
