Taxi Drivers

i dont suppose having some sort of GIVE WAY signage on the slip road would help

They’re already there, those single dotted white lines at the bottom of the slip road are the same as those painted on A roads at a give way junction

No they are not - Give Way markings at a junction have a double row of dotted lines.

Are you sure ?

Yes - you only get single ones at a roundabout.

if the road is marked correctly and that is not always the case if you have two broken lines as in give way it means you are giving way two traffic from both directions , if yu only have one broken line at a give way it means you are only giving way to traffic comming from one direction as in a roundaout or joining a one way street etc , i hope this helps

On a fast dual carriageway today, light traffic, in the middle distance noticed one of our EE artic friends at the exit of a layby, indicators on waiting for a gap to pull out. I was towing at around 55 and as the offside lane was clear for quite a distance back, indicated and moved over to give the guy a chance to get rolling.

What I didn’t reckon on was the grey car some way back in the slow lane was catching me up. I would have thought that if you can clearly see a vehicle trying to pull out and the vehicle in front has moved over to let him do so you follow suit - not this idiot, he simply undertook me on my left at exactly where the front of the artic was.

Selfish, thoughtless prat and guess what - a taxi driver. :open_mouth: or perhaps not.

Been stuck behind a few late night cabs obviously going slow to jack up their meter on single carriageway road. At a minimum you should be doing 40mph, been stuck behind 2 cabs this year crawling along at 30 in a national.

But in the subject of motorways. I really do think it’s about time that learners are given at least 1 lesson where they’re taken to the nearest Motorway and practice getting on and off it a few times. It’s a totally different game to a dual carriageway and you’re expected to just do it once you have a licence with no prior experience.

Had another incident with a taxi driving clown again last night. Going along merrily on the M60 near Ashton Under Lyne about 3am last night, there was a red VW Bora taxi in lane 2 doing about 60 mph overtaking something in lane 1. So I moved to lane 3 to overtake doing about 65 mph, which obviously greatly offended the Bora buffoon, who decided firstly not to return to lane 1 having overtaken the vehicle in lane 1, but secondly, and with me in lane 3 and him in his favoured middle-lane hogging position, he thought it would be good fun to speed up slightly and match my speed exactly (whilst simultaneously playing with his sat nav on his windscreen). Fair enough I thought, I’ll speed up to 70 and finally get past him. Buffoon Bora was having none of that, he sped up to exactly 70. Fair enough I thought, I’ll slow down to 60 and let this clown get on his small-willied way. SO GUESS WHAT SPEED BORA DECIDED TO DO? Yes, 60 mph! This continued for a few minutes until I slowed it down to a speed which I knew he would find unacceptably slow and he floored it and sped off into the distance (in the middle lane of the empty motorway). All for having the audacity to overtake him and his undoubtedly tiny manhood.

People have told me I am a C*** because I don’t move over for cars entering the Carriageway from a Slip Road. The above is why I don’t bother anymore, everyone assumes now that we have to move over. I do however do it for lorries where I can, but anyone else I keep at my same speed, many times cars have gone along side me and right to the end of the slip road without seeing that I am not altering my speed, and then resulting in them breaking hard. It is like they don’t see you or don’t judge the speed you are going at correctly.

Doesn’t really help at all - the double row of broken lines is the standard Give Way road marking for junctions (regardless of whether the major road is one- or two- way traffic). Roundabouts have their own specified markings, as do mini-roundabouts, as do grade separated junctions (i.e. slip roads). The assertion that the slip road markings are the same as at a junction is quite simply incorrect.

People seem to forget that a car can speed up or slow down pretty much instantly and therefore should be able to easily merge with moving traffic.

A truck joining a motorway is using every last bit of its power to drag a load of dead weight up to 50mph and it needs to just keep pulling while it joins. It has no easy way of altering its speed to join a motorway so give it some room. If the drivers nice you’ll get a hand up and a headlight flash as a thanks.

Exactly what I think, like I said cars on the other hand expect you to move over too and get the hump when you don’t

The problem is a lot of so called professional drivers do not drive responsibly. Taxi drivers, bus drivers and lorry drivers are amongst the worst drivers on our roads.
In my view they are far worse than any car driver because they are meant to be the professionals.
Just done a 500 mile round trip to Yorkshire and Liverpool and the average car driver was no worse than any so called professional.
I think some drivers do get worse the longer they drive. Bad habits ignorance and aggression are the obvious problems we see on our roads.
I would love to say I see good driving from 95% of truck drivers but I would be lying. Good and bad amongst all classes but professionals let themselves down badly by the lack of professionalism.

Also be aware a lot of taxi drivers were lorry drivers as I am sure most know.

So what fish are you hoping to catch for dinner tonight■■?

Just giving an honest opinion of what I think.
That is what Internet forums are for.
What’s your opinion of professional drivers without being biased?

You are getting confused between professional and competent lad
All lorry drivers are professionals as they get paid for the job, professional doesnt mean a brilliant driver it just means you earn money from the jobthat you are doing.

Oh well maybe they need to change the name of the forum then.

You have hit the nail on the head though…some professional drivers do not drive professionally which is what I was saying.

You can respect other drivers even although you are not a brilliant driver but a lot do not do that.

Would like to add Albion!

Do you only notice the BAD drivers and make comment? I see good and bad all day every day but I only seem to recall bad driving.

I may get 10, 12 or 14 lorries, vans, taxis pass me but if just 1 hampton ■■■■■ it up - that is the only one I remember Just a thought

Sorry mate but above 5mph a meter works on distance so 1 turn of a wheel is 1 turn of a wheel irrespective of speed above 5mph

Blunder Man:
I was a self employed taxi driver for a year in the 80s, and there is nothing on this Earth that could get me to do it again, or indeed work with the public again as a Bus driver for instance, I was a ticket snatcher for British Rail in 1978 and the abuse we used to get doing that was a bit rough (the worse the abuse, the bigger the thief) but the abuse and threats, the vomiters the plain stinking filthy people, the runners, the violent, the threats you got especially on a Fri/Sat/Sun in Bradford has to experienced to be believed.

Try taxiing in Glasgow mate [emoji16]

Eh■■? all lorry drivers are pro drivers as they get paid to drive, you are still getting professional and competent confused.
Definition of professional “A professional is a member of a profession or any person who earns their living from a specified activity”
Try changing your favourite word from professional to competent
