Not sure if I’m late to the party and you all do this anyway but last year I heard about tax relief on washing work clothes.
Well I called the tax office who said providing my employer didn’t already have an agreement in place I was entitled to earn an extra £60 before I paid tax.
Wow I here you cry that’s ■■■■■, well yes it is but better in my pocket than theirs.
In real terms 32% of £60 (20% income tax/12% NI) isn’t much but £19.20 is almost the price of a lappy at spearmint rhino, so in your face Mr Taxman.
Call the buggers up lads if you don’t get this already. It’s worth it as it’s all done over the phone.
Obligatory proof from this year’s tax allowance statement.
Don’t ask about the £6 debt I’m a very naughty boy…
Dipper_Dave:
What the £60 or lappys.
Nice one though. Surely I can help one person at least.
I get a meal subsidy too I think it’s only a few pence a day, I applied for it years ago when I first started driving 38 yrs and was told I would automatically get it every year .
Thanks Nick, top tip. Look after the pennies and the pounds will look after themselves as me gran used to say. As well as other things like why is my grandson so fascinated with his tallywacker.

Good post, helpful with money in your pocket and legal tax avoidance. Never thought of you as the Trucknet Martin Lewis but Dipper Dave, I have to say, your so money supermarket.

Dear Inland Revenue
RE: Expenses Allowance
I have been employed at Company Name, Location since (Date of Starting at Employment). I am obliged to launder the uniform, which is supplied to me by the company. I therefore wish to claim an expenses allowance of £■■ for each year since the above date.
Something I should have been doing a long time ago. I’ve nearly ways had company uniform to wash in most every job. Never ever get around to doing it though, and usually think it’s not a great deal but as said every penny adds up.

I’d be interested to know how you managed to claim 240 quid back for it.
As stated it’s tax relief on 60 quid of your earnings so at 20 % tax relief it’s 12 a year and you can only back date it for 3 years as far as I have always known.
So for example if I claim it in march for my current employment of 3 years on the books with my current firm its a grand total of 36 quid. I’m not sure it affects ni contributions though off hand.
One of the reasons I have never bothered claiming it for 12 a year as I never get around to it.
Although based on the jobs I have nearly always had wearing uniforms it’s a few quid that would have been better off in my pocket than the tax man’s.

I think you’ll find that ‘in your face’ works out at £28.00… unless it’s a right smelly munter.
