tax credits

Hi again ,
I have a job offer working for hermes using my own car on a self employed basis , I know its not ideal but its a job and will get me off the j s a , heres the question do any of you know if I will get tax credit to top up my wages , its 30 hrs a week 5 hours a day paying £30 a day I have to take my fuel out of that , also and this is another important thing before I take the job , will I still get my rent paid , housing benefit , because obviously I cant afford to work on those wages if I don’t , I will go to jobcentre Friday to ask but was just wondering if any of you guys knew the situation

As long as you work more than 16 hours per week and earn less than 36,000k (from memory it’s there or there abouts) you are entitled to tax credits. The amount will vary depending on why you earn. I can’t help with housing benefit. Sorry

Thanks Mick ,
well ive calculated on what ive been told by a person that does the job that diesel is around a tenner a day , and I was told by hermes that on average I will have 55 parcels 2 deliver and that will pay around £25 to £30 a day 6 days a week my rent is £400 a month exc other bills ie electric council tax gas food etc so obviously if they don’t carry on paying my rent thaen I will not be able 2 take the job , do the maths , , I did explain I only have a saloon car not a van but they said I can still get 55 parcels in it , im thinking they must be extremely small packages in that case …

Plus the cost of hire and reward insurance for the car approx. £2000 p.a. if you can find anyone prepared to insure you that is. Or are you happy to run without the correct insurance?

You have to be a certain age for tax credits aswell don’t ya? I tried seeing if I was eligible for them before but apparently have to be 25? Wich I think is ridiculous , I don’t get a penny off the government they get a lot out of me tho!

Just goes to show the Govt spin on the term ‘in work’

The OP will be off JSA so deemed to be in work but will not be off benefits

yes I do not want to use my car unless its prop insured for business use , I don’t want it impounded and points , so I asked the company about business insurance and was told that for 50p a day they add insurance on it , obviously I will question them more about this

£30 quid a day and you’re taking your diesel out of that. Even if the 5hrs per day was true (which I doubt - at least until you’re knowledge of the area is amazing) then you’re WELL below minimum wage.

Leave that job for the lithuanian house wives that are currently doing it mate. It sounds ■■■■ and if it all goes wrong (an accident etc) it’ll be you who’s in the ■■■■.
You’d need hire or reward insurance on your car and goods in transit, otherwise in a bump you’re not insured - you’ll notice your insurance normally states ‘social, domestic and pleasure (inc commuting)’ then it’ll say not for business use or similar.

If you just want a part time job, try macadees or a local shop or something like that, it’ll pay more than that job does and still keep you under the threshold for your benefits.

Hell, for £150 per week (minus £50 for fuel) you’d be better off as a dinner lady person

im 50? like I said I will enquire fri morn at the jobcentre , I don’t really want this job , ideally id prefer a proper full time paye job , but ive been trying for 2 years applying for jobs but its been totally a waste of time and this position came up and I thought its better than doing nothing , and believe me I have been applying for at least 3 jobs every day for 2 years …
and wayne I agree its not ideal but at least im doing something and not vegetating on the dole , I know I need insurance for business use and im only social domestic and pleasure at the mo that’s why I was very keen to point that out over the phone when they rang , like I said they confirmed they have there own insurance I can use for 50p a day , and yep yhe moneys poor but if and a big if I can get a top up with these working tax credits plus my housing benefit still in place then its cost effective and gets me out the house , obviously if I cant get extra help then its a n go , like I stated I would prefer a proper delivery job , but in 2 yrs and hundreds of applications to companys advertising delivery vacancies ive had a handful of interviews and no success…

I know it’s a job but leave well alone it’s not worth doing.

I’ve hrs done the online calculator and I can’t get them lol

Make sure you do if you decide to go ahead with it,seems way too cheap, although I have to agree with Wayne and say it doesn’t add up financially on its own. And are you not self employed on that? Not sure how that would impact any benefit claim.

I agree 50p a day sounds very sus , but I will def dbl check exactly if this is the proper insurance and not just goods in transit , ive a clean licence and want to keep it that way plus I dnt want to lose my car , that’s why I never reply to fast food takeaway jobs advertised because I know they expect you to just use your own car insurance and your not prop insured , I guess it all depends on what the job centre say as to wether I can get tax cfredits and keep my housing benefit , being self employed , like I said I don’t know yet until I make enquiries , obviously if I can get a reasonable extra top up and keep my hb then it is worth doing , but not unless I can …

There is a distinct difference between being insured for business use and being insured to carry goods, Most insurance companies will add business use on a personal car for no additional premium now, but you are not insured to be carrying goods in relation to a business then (more to do with the likes of Home carers traveling between houses and people who use there own cars to travel to customers or between sites for work ) you need a different policy to actually be able to carry goods then on top Goods in transit insurance to cover the value of the goods, plus on top of that public liability insurance if your self employed!! gets very expensive very quickly!!

I know people doing this who started with their cars and have now got their own vans and do it full time.
They get paid per parcel and like you say pay as you go insurance.
I would think its all kosher from a big firm like hermes

Correct ROG.

This government and the media are obsessed with people on benefits, so much so that there is hype about it everywhere, however I think it is forgotten that if you receive Child Benefit/Working Tax Credit/Housing Benefit you are also in receipt of benefits whether you are working or not. There is no difference - its a benefit.

As to the OP - keep away from it, if you are stopped by plod with parcels on board you need hire and reward insurance, no arguments at all your car will be seized for no insurance, round this way the police are targeting take out delivery drivers, the correct insurance is needed also.

I will insist that I am insured properly ie ask them to show me paperwork saying im insured for carrying goods …
Would it be agood idea to record everything said using my phone and I ask the direct question if im stopped by the police and asked am I insured to carry goods can you definitely state your insurance im paying you for insures me for this job , and if they state yes it does then if by any chance it doesn’t , do if I play the recorded msg back to the police this give me an alibi , that I took all reasonable precautions to make sure I was insured and they are the guilty persons by lying to me in other words I was told I was and I had no reason by paying the extra money over that I was not .
This is the reason I will not do food takeaway jobs ie pizza deliverys indian take aways etc

Did you tell them what kind of use it was for though? Business use for travelling to clients/collecting goods for me is free on my personal policy but as soon as I’m being paid to deliver stuff it quadruples.

OP

Ring them up - they have a pretty good helpline and will talk you through it…just be prepared to jump through hoops when they want proof of earnings, savings and outgoings - it is a potential minefield :unamused:

I guess you have dependants at home? If you’re already claiming Child Benefit, that alone makes the whole tax credits process much easier…

Good luck

no I have no dependants just me and my dog !! and conor its not my insurance I need to ring , hermes have said they will insure me for delivering there goods for 50p a day ,just sounds to cheap ? I dnt mind giving the tax credit people any answers to questions , I wont be able to give them proof of earnings though because I wont have started the job , im ringing to find out if I will get tax credits and I will tell them the rate and earnings I have been told by hermes , I have been unemployed for 3 yrs so there welcome to look at my bank statements as I have no money …
