Tarmac Lafarge

Been offered some work driving an 8 wheel tipper out of a local quarry. Any of you guys done this type of work? Whats it like?

Ssee my post new tipper job lol

It’s at the cushier end of driving, the only real thing to consider is to be on flat ground when you tip the body. Apart from that the job’s a doddle.

Yes I do this type of work often, mainly on nights for Lafarge Tarmac , pics taken on m1 north at j 23 last year, 270 ton sat waiting to tip before the plainer had even started up!
Windrush pete, the chap on the right with his back to the camera is J D Wayne, he is also first in line to tip!
see new tipper job thread

Daft question, how long does the tarmac keep in the back of the 8legger before it sets■■?

some types will stand longer than others, the type used on motorways they recon starts to go off after about 4/5 hrs though its often on much longer than that
it’s not uncommon for some types to be on all day/night

Now’t changes then Moose! There were three grades of work at Ballidon, lowest grade (mine!) most O’D’s (a lot better)…and then J.D’s which was top notch!!!

used to ‘overnight load’ 6mm bitumen on occasion in Mountsorrel when i was in there.they’d put some sort of additive in to preserve the load IIRC

24% where I drive, I am S/E and don’t only drive, I do other types of work as well
all the full time 8 wheeler drivers at our place are on 24%

Hi moose/windrush, is there a usual route how an o/d may get rid off his truck if he’s upgrading, is there a notice board, is it word of mouth etc, maybe a page on lafarges website? Or do most of them die before being replaced? (The truck-not the O/D) Only reason I ask is iv considered Tarmac or Midland quarry products and if a lorry with life that was spec’d came up I think I’d do it
Kind regards

Change of owners due to be announced this week regarding Tarmac.

If you are an actual Tarmac/LaFarge contract o/d I understand that you can only sell the vehicle back to them, that is how it used to be under the ‘old’ Tarmac regime. They will offer you a price lower than what you could sell it privately for, rest assured, and then sell it on to another contract haulier (possibly just starting out) at an inflated price! I know a few lads locally who were caught out like that, however things MAY now have changed for the better and I am totally wrong in what I say. Moose might know more.

Not likely to be TILCON though Dave, more’s the pity! :unamused:
