Tankers Advice

Just coming up for two years class 1 experience and, apparently, better possibilities job wise. I’m thinking I’d like to get into tanker work (preferably petrol) but as I work nights I don’t see too many of them about so I’m not sure who to be contacting.

I currently have ADR core and parts 2, 4 and 5 but can easily acquire the flammable liquids part.

Basically I’m after some tanker firms in central and southern Scotland (or even up Aberdeen way) that might take on someone with limited experience (done milk collections from farms) and be prepared to train people up.

Also, it has to be tramping as I live in the arse end of nowhere and the longer the distances involved in the job the better (but perhaps beggars can’t be choosers work wise at the beginning).

Any other helpful info would be appreciated too.

I think most of the forecourt petrol tankers are either dyas or nights. Hoyer at grangemouth are looking but need to be within an hours commute.

i think you really need to look at chemical tankers such as a and f grant or john miller limited.

Sliiiiight thread hijack but kinda on topic (sorry) those on tankers is it possible to earn £35,000+ and if so, petrol or other?

There is no tramping on petrol tankers

John Miller Lockerbie
William Nicol Aberdeen
Harry Lawson Broughty Ferry

All do ADR tank work

I reckon that you may be correct.

Was going to say Freddie Grant at Ballindaloch but see someone already has. Done a bit for them and varied and interesting work and it’s tramping, or was when I was there …

Can’t speak for petrol, but as is usually the case hire and reward or contractor is best avoided if possible (very difficult now), other than that £35k+ basic salaries are out there, where own account scores is you arn’t expected to do two weeks work each week to earn it.

Suttons were looking recently but have just stopped recruiting. They have pkaces in Blantyre, Gretna and a couple run out of Grangemouth.
Trouble is finding one to train you up. I was doing tanks recently on gas, supposed to be just trunking but got trained at a couple sights to tip. Doesnt mean I can go after tank jobs though. Never beeb signed off but I did enjoy the work. Was pretty warm weather mostly right enough.
I get alerts through set for ADR for all over and some of the money comes in pretty high. Not sure I trust the figures when they say £82,000

Hi Telt,

You’re correct that you can easily acquire UN Class 3 (Flammable Liquids), but the part I’ve made red above cannot possibly be correct.

To have gained any sort of ADR card, you MUST have already done:

Core (no options, it’s mandatory)

Then you MUST ALSO have choosen EITHER Packages OR Tanks
(One is mandatory, but you can do both if you wish.)

Then AT LEAST ONE of the UN Classes (There are 9 to choose from.)

From the info you’ve given, my GUESS is that you have Core + Packages + Classes 2, 4 and 5, which is a strange combination, but perfectly possible and legal.

If my guess is correct, you will need to do UN Class 3 (as you said) but… PLUS the tanker module in order to drive a petrol tanker.

If you take that option, you will need to produce your current ADR card, then your photo will already be on the SQA system, and the instructor puts an “X” in the box marked ‘additional’ on the joining form cos you’re already in the system. Your candidate number is the number beginning with a “5” at item #1 on your ADR card.

As a word of advice, it might be worth your while to consider your expiry date, because your additional Class 3 + Tanks will NOT extend your current validity. There is also the periodic DCPC to consider, because you might be able to kill several birds with one stone.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for advice all.

Harrawaffa - Yeah I’d noticed those three on the road. I have to say Nicol in Aberdeen look like a right decent outfit and their website looks pretty impressive with some good, specialist work on the go that I’d like to learn. I’m guessing they’d be looking for some experience though although I am tempted to take a trip up there some time and just ask them in person how feasible it would be to get in the door. Lawson have an online application which I’ve sent off.

Alliepallie and Raymundo - Yeah, I’ve seen that firm about too and had wondered but Ballindaloch really is quite seriously out of my way although I wouldn’t entirely rule it out if, as you say, it’s a varied and interesting job. I’ve seen the Hoyer website and noticed they’re recruiting in Grangemouth. The one hour commute thing may not be insurmountable as my parents are about 1hr 15mins from there and the app form does ask if you’re willing to do nights, tramping and 4 on 4 off so I’d say they must have some options in terms of the rota. Crucially, they do say they’ll provide training and put the right person through their appropriate courses.

DieselDave - You’re correct. Core + Packages + UN 2, 4 and 5. The selection was made by the small island firm I used to work for as that just happened to be the relevant categories to the goods they moved. I’m currently valid for another 4 years yet and, as you say, I could get another one or two days worth of CPC credit out of the Tanks module and the UN 3. I see your location is Ellesmere Port. Do you know anything about Argent Energy in terms of recruitment policy? I know they have a place near Cleland but their website is pretty thin on info about driver recruitment.

Alerts from where? A specific app or website?

From a site “trovit”. Was trying to find an email or something from it to post but think it just sends notification.

Those Argent tanks you see are John Miller tanks and drivers. He does their transport.

That would make sense. Their website gives the tanker division’s hq as Ellesmere Port.
