I know this isn’t everyone’s cup of tea so please don’t turn this into a thread about whether you should or shouldn’t polish your tank. Each to their own eh?
Questions for anyone who does polish their tank. Best product? Best cloths to use to apply it?
I’ve got a bottle of white diamond just because I heard good things about it. I’ve done my second polish and it’s sort of starting to look decent. But I seem to be going through cloth after cloth after cloth as they become black so so quickly and then don’t do anything to help.
Also it’s not as even as id like. In good light I can see some bits that are like a mirror (like how I want all of it) and some bits aren’t, but I don’t know what I’ve done different.
Any tips from someone who’s good at this on cloths and techniques for a tank polishing newbie? Haha
I’ve never done diesel tanks but I polish the exhaust on my car occasionally and I find using steel wool and then wipe off with a cloth leaves a nice finish
Edit: I meant using the metal polish with the steel wool just incase there was any confusion
Start with the white diamond. A stained second hand tank will take upwards of ten goes. Wet and dry it if easier. Then once you’ve got a decent shine to it, move on to great lion. Get the 3 star. Use the palm of your hand in an up and down motion to apply, and use the palm of your hand again but in a circular motion to get off. Then use another clean micro fibre to buff up and take off any you’ve missed.
You said you’ve only had two goes at it, it’ll take a lot more
Can you get hold of a buffer? That brings them up without hours of actual work. I used to polish mine but too busy to wash my unit at the minute after 66+ hours out all week last thing I’m doing is washing the truck down ■■■■ em
The uneven bits will sort itself out through perseverance the only quicker fix is getting a buffer, best one I saw connected to an airline and the pressure was brilliant though I guess the right pads helped to.
Oh, and I used old t shirts for first few layers then microfibre cloths to buff it up.
I used Autosol and 2 microfibre cloths first few times to get the worst of the water marks and corrosion off. Now use Brasso and 2 jay cloths for shine. Seems to work ok for me!
Surely tank polishing is mainly done by trampers? How do day drivers find the time to do it? The type of job must play a part, who’d tank polish a tipper or a mixer knowing that all their hard work will be undone with just one trip through a wheelwash?
By hand i find rough cotton cloths best for applying the polish, then use blue disposable paper towels for taking the crap off, then polish with a normal cotton cloth such as an old T shirt.
Peak is good for getting a finish, quite cheap from Chemiclean in 1 litre tins, and its a handy site for all you chemical needs if you fancy a perusal, including home stuff, that 5 litre bottle of window cleaner blue stuff is the dogs ■■■■■■■■ of home window cleaners.
White diamond polish finish lats longer but its too bloody expensive to use for attaining that finish.
I use Poorboys wheel wax on the tank after polishing, it keep several washes with TFR at bay, and helps to prevent salt attack during the winter.
If the tank is bad then its going to take a lot of work to get it up to standard.
Might be better off using wet and dry 1200 grade wet if its really bad first off.
re Taz, nice job mate, there’s some work gone on there, looks cared for and sod all wrong with that…
