Talstaff.... and new driver looking for work?

Hi everyone…

I passed my class 2 just 2 weeks ago, i have handed my details to pertemps and Talstaff (south yorkshire)
What contracts do Talstaff provide with which companies?
I’m aware that pertemps Provide work for DHL, gist etc.

Im currently a full time prison officer but looking for a change.
Does anyone work with these 2 agencies who can give a heads up?

In any case can anyone give any tips as ive never done agency work and always been in full time employment.

Thanks
Nick

Just to be clear on this.

You are moving from a secure, salaried, pensioned job to do class 2 agency work?

correct!

come and work with me for a week Alan and im sure you would have a different take on your last comment!

Nick

Think Alan is correct never leave full time work to go work for an agency, unless you can live without pay

I have only just received my license, so far it looks impossible otherwise to find a job as i have no experience.

i will look into trying to get some while i still work in my current job just to get my foot in the door, but my goal is to become a full time driver.

Nick

i have also just spoken to blue arrow, has anyone had any experience with them.

Cheers
Nick

Do you know anything about agencies and agency working?

Not a great deal no. But i guess ill soon find out.

No company appears to set on drivers with no experience so it seems the only option initially.

Nick

There are companies that will take new drivers on it’s just finding them. Now agencies 99 times out of 100 they will lie to you they have no work to give you unless someone rings looking for a driver so when they say they will keep you in work don’t listen to them.
Read the post from Onlyalan below that says most of what you need to no

Fair enough point, I don’t know about your current job… BUT … nor do you know about HGV agency work. I had to change career due to medical reasons and moved into driving about 2 years ago. I have learned more in that 2 years than most people learn doing a PhD.

Like you, I lived in the North East. Like you, I am able to spell, present well, write a good CV, etc. I worked my bollox off trying to find decent work (or ANY work a lot of the time). And that is with a Class 1 licence. I eventually moved to Essex where things are a bit easier.

If you need a change of job - go ahead, but there are better jobs out there than driving a truck. I suggest you remove those rose-coloured specs you are wearing. You may be on the verge of a new adventure but, unless you are very lucky, you are also on the verge of a lot of disappointment.

If you still go for it, I (like most on here) will help in any little way I can… BUT … I may also drop in the occasional ‘I told you so’.

Good luck.

Alan

Check what they have paid against the time sheets. They rely on drivers not to check their pay.It can vary from £5 to £ 40 difference in pay or more.
When ringing in to query pay, there are their excuses.Pay roll clerk has nipped out to the bank, or she is ill or on holiday.

Well a change for me is on the cards, and im here for tips and advice, so any good or bad is welcome guys.

Cheers Alan

I reckon the reverse is probably true too…

Hi Oldboy

I am one of Pertemps approved CPC trainers and have done over 50 days for them. Please PM me with a few details and I will call them and try to help. I’m sure I can help.

Pertemps have my CV, they said they would be in touch.

Thanks

First rule when dealing with recruitment agencies, believe nothing that you hear and only half of what you see.

Agencies are a people business, so be aware that one branch of an agency can be very different from another branch of the same agency.

My advice would be to stick to your current job and try to get some driving work on your days off before committing yourself to it full time.

Yes thats my plan for the time being.

It’s a pity you’re convinced that agency is the only way forward. Most full time work isn’t advertised. You need to get round the industrial estates knocking on the door wherever there’s a truck. It will be soul destroying and you’ll grow an even thicker skin than the one I’m sure you’ve already got!

CE will improve your employability.

All the best with whatever you decide. Pete

i worked for talstaff when I first passed in july 2012 they gave me work it was working for londis out of south elmsall
its all caged work which is not east as its not on loading bays & some shop keeps are right ■■■■■■■■■.
the job is a complete joke I haven’t worked there since my misses told them to ■■■■ off when they called at 3 in the morning.
this happened alot call at 3am to work for 5am

I’ve been making equirys with companies not just agencies, mostly to a no as no experience.

Pete I will be taking CE as soon as I get the funds together, will help with the options I’ve no doubt.
