Rip Off Britain was interesting this morning, one of the subjects was about all the empty space particularly in food packaging.
For instance a full load of super size boxes of breakfast cereal will see you carrying around about half a load of fresh air. Even though we know that loose product settles, in reality it is all a marketing ploy to make A’s product look better value than B’s when on the shelf.
I’ve noticed that the stuff I buy has gotten smaller over the years.

When they tell you your washing machine soap liquid is “concentrated” and you only need to put a little bit in, do you just throw in plenty just in case?

When I was a child back in the 70’s/80’s Wagon Wheel Biscuits were big nowadays I can eat one in one go!!
Bet then perhaps that is why I’m on a diet and eating lots of fresh veg & fruit, at least I ■■■■ better now!!

In 1934 Wagon wheels started at 8oz (about 56g) now they are 41g (about 6 Oz) …just looked it up, Ain’t the web great !, So yes they have shrunk.
look on the bright side, every time I open a tin of evaporated milk, its full…
Every food item is getting smaller, manufacturers make the boxes and packages bigger to kid us all into thinking the product is bigger than it actually is. We’re all being conned, every day.
Are London Rubber doing the same thing?
Its not only that, but the amount of re cycling we have to do, having to rip up boxes so they don’t take up so much space, then all the plastic for meat products etc, my local council give us 13 bags a month, yet I am using a great deal more, but having run out of the clear bags, I have to put in black bags, and then it goes to land fill…so its a waste of time…and so I am told, if someone puts a wrong item in the recycling bag…the whole collection goes to land fill…so whats that all about ?
Apart from being conned as a consumer the thing that bothers me about it is the waste of fuel moving fresh air about. If the box is only half full then that means another complete lorry load to move product which could have gone onto only one vehicle.
If they halved the size of the boxes or filled them up so people bought half as many that would mean less trucks on the road meaning less jobs.
Coupla thoughts:
When buying stuff in the supermarket do you all not check price per kilo? I certainly do, don`t get fooled by funny shapes n sizes of packaging that way.
And re thread title: 1kilo of air is about 1.2 cubic metres, so a ton is about 1,200 cubic metres.
Assuming half full packaging, 1ton air needs 2,400cubic metres of goods.
Artic trailer is about 13m x 2.5m x 2.5m so 80ish cubes.
So 150 trailers needed to transport one ton of air in oversized packaging. Pedant? Moi?
