Hey all I’m gonna be booking training for my class 1 in January iv had my class 2 for 8 years now so I thought it’s about time I give it a go I was suprised to see the wages agency’s are paying is kinda low and to be honest I struggled to find a job that pays more than I’m getting right now driving a rigid… either way I’m gonna be getting my class 1 and I’ll wait for the right opportunity to come along
Got my class 1 in September, 9 years after getting class 2, thankfully it was at first time of asking as self funded. My boss did coax me into taking it as company want to grow and had ordered a new draw bar outfit a few weeks before taking it (not much pressure on me then!!!) although he offered to pay half, I wanted to cover full fee as I don’t feel comfortable knowing he would have half the course fee hanging over me.
Good luck when you do yours, took me a day to get used to driving something longer and bendier, just take your time and don’t over complicate things. Every evening of the course I came home and went over in my head what I’d done that day, including coupling/uncoupling procedure (which was a struggle to get each part of procedure in order on some days) and questions for “show me/tell me”. The night before the test I didn’t bother thinking about it or going through questions, just had a relaxing evening, long hot shower, and early to bed.
I felt like a nervous wreck driving down to training school, had a drink and a choc bar and calmed myself down and had an OK pre test lesson. Test went well, had answers for 2 questions sorted no problem, reverse manoeuvre went well as did drive, uncoupling/coupling procedure, I just took a very deep breath and did at my own pace. The relief when he told me I passed was over whelming, my instructor looked over test sheet, and told me there were zero faults on test, so I was double happy!!!

It’s never to late, I passed class 2 (well class 3 in them days) at the age of 21 then a couple of weeks before my 50th birthday I passed class 1 as paid for and requested by my firm.
The pressure is on when taking the test as it’s about 360 quid for a retest I think

Good look on your class 1 mate…when I did mine there was no modules in a classroom and no CPC …medical was reading a number plate from 5paces and cost a tenner and the training was 5 days with 45 min for the driving test £450 all in.
What folk have to pay now is criminal and if I had to start again I would rather pack shelves in a supermarket.

If u don’t mind me asking guys what kinda money you getting on class 1? I’m on top wack for class 2 earning 27 to 28k a year

In Hull you can get Cat C and Cat CE plus DCPC traning for under £2k. I actually rang up the driver training schools myself when my son said they’d said that as I thought he’d misheard and it was £2k for each and I’d paid £1500 for CE 20 years ago.
Conor that’s not a bad price to be fair mate… for my class 1 it’s around 1000/1500 quid in the west Midlands

I succeeded in talking both my boys out of being drivers.
It was in their blood as they had both been all over the UK and W.Europe with me.
I refused to help them in any way,… a case of being cruel to be kind.
They both managed to get apprenticeships, (real ones btw not the Mickey Mouse driving ‘‘apprenticeships’’ a la Stobarts for eg.)
They are both earning a lot more than they would as drivers (and more than me btw) for half the hours and home at 5. 30. every night.
Also the training did not have to be funded by them.
A no brainer situation I would reckon.

I went to bed early
Not early enough it seems!
Just the way my day has gone, buggered up, even wedged my wagon at the exit from Bentleys Crewe turning the tight right turn to the security exit… Ffs an embarrassing couple of shunts a beep of the horn and slithered out sheepish
And that was the good bit of the day

LOL - Have a Stella, it will all quickly become a distant blur…And then a loud BANG!!!
As you fall off the sofa…
We’ve all had em though, even in my short career…
I’ve a drop or 2 I’d rather not return too, as it wasn’t my finest bit of driving.
Luckily it’s only been making an arse of it, and not actually hitting anything…
How hard can it be to shift the trailer across to the right 6 feet in an empty yard with 30ft to shunt in?
Answer: Bloody impossible if you watch me!

Wow! …And I remember the days during your Class 2 period on here when you kept a low profile, and you were an inoffensive friendly type of chap,…how a Class1 can change someone.
