As the other guys have said, take your time.Do the job properly, the way you were trained,no shortcuts,no second chances.Learn from any errors/mistakes,and enjoy yourself.Good luck and think ahead, and don’t worry about what other people might think of you,do it your way,the correct way.
Take your time leaving the Yard, if other folk are watching IGNORE them, concentrate on what you are doing.
If unsure ask, if still unsure ask again and get it explained to you in a way you understand.
When I get somewhere I always say ‘this is my first time here’ to the ‘Reception/Security’ bods, that way if anything has changed since your last visit you will know about it. (I’d done quite a few trips to Tilbury Docks, on one occasion I said ‘I’m new’ and the ‘BabeSki’ explained how it all works and then said to get out with your Full Container you have to put the seal number in a computer terminal thingy. Oooooo That was a new one
Enjoy it, everyday is a challenge, I love driving
ALWAYS check your fifth wheel. then check it again.
check your handbrake is on when lifting a trailer.
Don’t forget to wind up the legs once you hook up oh and put the hand brake on or when you put the lines on you will be going out of the yard without a driver
Just make sure you hook up properly, loads of threads on here about it. And like has said before ASK as there are still quite a few bokes out here that are willing to help!
All the best
Streaky.
Check everything twice, learn what your trailer does, it works differently to a drawbar caravan. When you turn right the front of the trailer goes left first.
Don’t over-steer, you will ■■■■ it up!
Enjoy yourself

whats wrong with glenrothes? its easy to get on the bays their?
plus i get to unload my own trailer and get to keep the keys
no waiting about for them while they decide to unload me i do it for them and make a lovely mess of their goods in area
Let the engine warm up,to allow the oil to get all over the engine, pulling off quick will damage the motor, and allow it to idle for a few minutes when stopping too.
Take some foam ear plugs for noisy lay bys.
It took me 3 times to pass my artic test,i was nervous, and the examiner had a favourite junction with partly erased white lines, good money spinner for them.
Drink loads of water, you dry out in a warm cab.
Write on the back of the tacho,if errors are made,it covers your back.Ie,traffic jam/accident,no place to stop, carried on for safe parking.
Buy a Salter kitchen timer for the driving hours.
Secure all cab items,to avoid getting hit on the head by your wheel jack,if you turn over.
Use bungy cords to avoid stretching your suzies.
A boiler suit is good for protecting your clean clothes.
A couple of things, remember you have now got eight corners to watch out for instead of four and when you finish and if you have to drop the trailer on a bay, remember to take the number plate off

Ever gone on a rigid after doing artics■■? Bloody embarassing
Hope the OP got on OK-plenty of good advice given. No question is stupid, but some answers may be
The one thing I would stress, is when your doing your walk round and you push the trailer brake off…STOP!
Give it 3 - 5 seconds just incase you only thought you put the handbrake on.
■■■■, the amount of times I’ve chased a trailer when I forget to put the handbrake on! By staying next to the button it means you can pull it back out and potentially save your job and someones life.

cheers boys, lot of funny ones and a lot of helpfull ones, i didnt find today too bad but thats because its was industrial estates to industrial estates and one bay, rest of the week its garden centres !! lot less room and a lot more cars to hit ! i really dis like blind sight reversing its not a nice feeling not being able to see where the trailer is going. theres a lot of trailer swapping at where im at (bleach of lavant to anyone down south), i think this week is going to be stressfull but there is something very satisfying about pulling off a textbook reversing manuver !
