There are very few actually sane people around. Automobiles just give people the perceived safety barrier to be who they really are.
It’s caused by different people’s differing susceptibility and response to the Dunning-Kruger effect.
The Dunning-Kruger Effect is a cognitive bias that causes us to overestimate our skill level, without noticing that we’re doing it, in order to allow us to do things that would be overwhelmingly dangerous without it. It’s the “it won’t happen to me” thing. It applies to lots of things, driving included, such as smoking, extreme sports etc, where the logical fear reaction should stop us from doing the activity.
People respond in different ways to it - overconfidence can lead to higher than normal levels of aggression, or impatience… or interestingly, over-relaxation or over-caution!

I call it “The Ambition/Ability Inequality”. On display many many times on our roads.

Absolutely spot on pal. It’s a great pity more drivers were aware of the Dunning-Kruger effect.
