It’s an excellent photograph, but it is not the Tahir Pass. The signpost shows that the picture was taken on the west side of Erzerum, whereas the infamous Tahir lies east of it, between Horasan and Agri.

The last three photos are more like it, from Erzerum to Agri is about 185 km, doesn’t sound far but I used to allow a day to do it as you never knew what was going to happen…

I last drove that road in 1977 on the way to India and things have certainly changed since then, but moving the town of Askale about a hundred miles is not one of them.

The stretch of road shown is a good drive and is reasonably level, winding through the mountains, with the railway never far away. In the Sixties it was a dirt road from central Turkey to the Iranian border.

A search on here for Tahir will bring up several threads, one of them, from KW, used to have some superb photographs of the Tahir Pass, but they need to be re-instated on his image hosting site…
Here is one that I saved at the time,

In 1971 I went off the road out there, there is a picture of the incident in Truckboy’s Tahir thread.

Have you always lived in the Cambs area? Would you remember Gary North who lived in Chatteris? He used to drive for Trans UK on M/E and died a couple of years ago.

KW asked,

Have you always lived in the Cambs area? Would you remember Gary North who lived in Chatteris? He used to drive for Trans UK on M/E and died a couple of years ago.

  • No, only seven years, before that Hertfordshire - so I don’t remember Gary from Chatteris.

Could you possibly make available the pictures that you posted from your friend, Joe Bowser? They are terrific photos of the Tahir Pass, regretably I only saved the one.
