Tacho's part of the CPC

I firmly believe that they should make tacho’s part of the Initial CPC you have to do before you can drive. Having not long passed myself I ran into the problem of not actually knowing how to work the tacho machine. Nowhere in our training do they teach you on the operation of the tacho unit itself. They test you on the hours you can/can’t work and such and how to fill out an analogue tacho disc in theory but they never actually expect you to be able to do it in practice. In my Mod 4 test, I was asked the usual stuff like how to check the truck to see if its road worthy but I feel this is all moot if you can’t use the tacho machine.

I’ve asked lots of drivers in the yards that I’ve been too in my brief time but every one of them has a different way of doing things with many conflicting with the other.

Am I barking up the wrong tree here or am I right in what I’m saying?

You can be asked to demonstrate the use of the tacho on the driving test. But I am a great supporter of drivers hours and tachos being in the initial cpc.

Mod 2 should be a test on the regs

Agreed

Plenty of information out there in the net and on this forum Radar for finding out stuff you don’t know, Just goes to show that the new CPC’s aren’t full proof… thought they where suppose to make newbies super dooper truckers that knew it all… :grimacing:
