Tacho technical problem

I’m hoping someone can help with this

I have a 2003 Mercedes Vario 7.5 ton fitted with a camper body and used for private transport.

To prevent the batteries going flat when not in use I have an isolator fitted. When the isolator is screwed in (to make the connection) the speedo needle on the tachograph slowly goes from 0 round to maximum and stays there. If the front of the tacho is opened the needle drops back to zero but will then not read anything. It is as if the drive head stays at maximum even though the needle springs back to zero when the front is opened. The odometer part of the tacho works fine. I presume this is some kind of start up sequence but don’t know how to reset it so that it works. The tachograph worked perfectly until the battery was disconnected to fit the isolator. Although I don’t need to use the tacho as it is a private lorry this is my only speedometer.
The tacho is an analogue Veeder Root model (I think model number e10) with switches for 2 drivers but I can’t find anyone who knows about them.

If there’s anyone out there who remembers the “old-style” tachos and know what the answer is then please let me know!

Just open up the tacho and push the needles in and .the speedo will reset. Or just keep a old tacho in the head and just opening shut it will do the same :sunglasses:

you can get clear plastic blank sheets…put 2 in the tacho and it will reset and then you can forget about it.
putting a disc in will work but leaving them in for a long while can tear the disc and it can clog things up.

Guys - Sorted Thanks for your help

This was one of the tell tales that were designed to catch the wary, if you disconnected the power feed, the tacho was designed to show it. As you have fitted an isolator, you have defeated the object of having a tachograph fitted, so have you considered having it surgically removed?

If it says Motor Caravan on the V5C you are exempt anyway, if it says Living Van, you may need a tachograph if it is over 3500kg which a VITO isn’t

Hello
.

I have recently bought a 7.5 tonne truck. The owner had left old tacho in and it had ripped. The tacho does not record your speed but records what mode you select. Any ideas

What do you mean by ripped■■? Is it the old chart style with a key for opening the head ■■? Do you mean the ribbon that connect the head to the body and allows you to open the head has ripped ■■?

Hi all. I have been searching for a fix to the same problem at the start of this thread! We have tried the pins and having blank discs in but none of these have worked. I see this problem was resolved? What else can I try? Thanks!

Do you actually need a working tacho? Or just a working speedo?
Whatever it is probably helpful to say what vehicle, and tacho make you have.

We do not need a taco just the speedometer. It is a Veedr root and the problem is exactly the same as the one described at the start of the thread. We have just bought the lorry (DAF 150/45) on driving away found the speedometer not working and then discovered that the fuse was out. An isolator fitted so I’m assuming this has caused the issue.

I don`t know the law on Construction & Use, nor MoT regs, but a SatNav or phone app will give you a working speedo.
Might be more a temp bodge than a fix but it is cheap and quick.

We have a plug in gps speedometer to tide us over but would like to get to the bottom of it if we can. Does anyone know where we stand mot wise?

Not a testable item.

If the fuse was pulled I’d also be checking the speedo sender unit on the gearbox in case that was tampered with.
