This is for transport offices to download cards and units, a company card is still required and VOSA/POLICE HAVE NO ACCESS to this system.

This its what’s should be coming in with the new tachographs,
http://www.consilium.europa.eu/uedocs/cms_data/docs/pressdata/en/trans/137278.pdf
It will have a facility for the authorities to download the data remotely, and the tachograph will log its gps position every 3 hours of driving.

Yep true, but this is probably where the BS is coming from, somebody half asleep on a DCPC course wakes up for a brief moment when the instructor mentions it (most courses seem to be filled with a bit of chat) but misses the first part about it being a future development, they then spread it around RDC’s.

Just one tiny icke little flaw to this,
without stopping the truck how do you confirm the identity of the driver ?Same way they do now for speed camera offences
sorry, maybe a little thick here, speed camera pic shows the vehicle ,not the driver

As the GPS location is only going to be logged once every 3 hours, I doubt it’ll be much use for speed detection or route tracing.
I suppose they might be able to tell who’s card is in the head before they stop you, but in the documents about its introduction there was a lot about data protection.

A camera wouldn’t be needed, I’m sure a visit to your company would soon settle any dispute about who was driving the vehicle, in fact a phone call would most likely do the trick
When this comes in, we will have driverless lorries anyway. The DfT have started organising trials on a convoy system where one driver can drive 17 lorries I can imagine the mayhem when a car driver wants to cut across three lanes of traffic between the convoy

We’ve come a long way since humans had to get out of their
armchair just to change from one to the other of their two
available TV channels.
Children of Truck Drivers born today will witness a truly
amazing future of technology.
I just hope that they can find some food when China
needs to buy most of it to feed its own population.
