The only printouts you have to keep are the ones you do to explain a deviation from the rules.
They should be kept with you for 28 days.

There’s no legal requirement for daily printouts.

…and then returned to the employer, just like paper charts, surely?

(so that if VOSA come knocking and ask why you went over hours, they have an explanation)

Yes you are of course right I could have been clearer on that, I replied to the question from my phone hence the short reply.

Any legally required printouts should be carried with you for the current day plus 28 days then handed in to the transport operator, this is a legal requirement.

I generally suggest taking 2 printouts so you can keep one with you and hand the other one in when the driver card is downloaded.
