Does anyone know the law for how far out the tacho clock can be? I read on DVSA website that it needs calibrating if more than 20 minutes out, is that the law also?

It depends which time you’re talking about, if you mean the time shown on the display it doesn’t matter how far out it is but you can put it right anyway, if you’re talking about the UTC time that shows the time for your activities it can be no more than 20 minutes out.
If the time is more than 20 minutes out it needs to go to a tachograph centre to be put right.
If it’s not more than 20 minutes out you can change it by one minute each week.

Sad git that I am, I get a bit OCD about the UTC time setting in our vehicles (I drive them all from time to time) and always adjust them even if they are only a minute or so adrift. Maybe I need to get out more…

That is not sad at all mate. Leaving it when you know it is wrong, is just as unhelpful as leaving the diesel/adblue empty, or the mirrors filthy.
