I am due to start my first tramping job tomorrow and I was just wondering about my card. Is it normal to leave it in the reader for the whole week or to pop the card when you finish for the day
If I am going to leave my card in then I need to remind myself to switch it to break
I realise the answer is obvious if you know it but thought I would check anyway
If you leave it in all week, you will have less wear and tear on the card, and also on the unit itself. The downside is you need to remember to put it on rest at the end of the shift. Another possibility is that you are assigned a truck that defaults to other work whenever you turn the ignition on, meaning you could mess your rest up by accident by wanting to open a window, or trying to turn on the radio.
If you take it out, you have to remember to put it back in each morning!
My preference would be to take it out, as I’m a forgetful sod, and would be checking the bloody machine every five minutes to make sure its still on rest, instead of actually resting!
I’ve always taken my driver card out but as has been said it’s a matter of personal choice.
If you leave the card in you need to manually enter the shift end location at the end of the shift and the shift start location at the start of the next shift.
I leave mine in all week…But do you really need to input the end location in when you finish your shift & start it again?..As the only option is Uk…Used to change the country when doing europe of course…But just on Uk work now and wondered if you would actually get done for that…

I’ve no idea how serious the DVSA regard not entering the country symbols or if they would do anyone for it, however there is a possible £50 fixed penalty for the offence.
I will be taking it out as I’ve a rotten memory and the answer about checking the unit every 5 mins struck a chord with me as I do it already during the 45 mins break
I hadn’t thought about the UK answer as will be doing European trips soon and it hadn’t occurred to me. Will have to check that one with the employer and see what they prefer
My driving experience pre-dates digital. But when I was tramping I used to tuck the keys inside the box of new charts so I remembered to use a new chart. Similar principle and it worked for me.

Well if your going onto european work you wil need to enter start and finish country locations…And if doing spain i think you have to enter the region too…Only done spain twice though…And can’t remember what i entered for that.
