Hi, I have recently started a job doing a mixture of driving and other work. I have been reading up about drivers hours but I’m struggling on a couple of things:
Is it a requirement (I’m pretty sure it is) to make note of ‘other work’ completed during the working day?
If I use the following example, can somebody point out how this is best recorded ie:manual printout or log book? The digi card was only inserted whilst driving as that was when the vehicle was available to me:
start work at 9am, carry out ‘other work’ until 1pm, (4hrs) ‘drive’ until 3pm (digi tacho) (2hrs) carry out ‘other work’ until 5pm(2hrs)
Also, what is the ‘rest’ requirement on the above working day pattern?
All OTHER WORK must be recorded - That other work can be recorded on a digi tacho, seperate printouts or on seperate analogue charts - one for each day worked
It is perfectly OK to use an analogue chart to record the other work in your situation - just make sure you keep those charts for at least 28 days (4 weeks) and hand them in to the vehicle operator before 42 days (6 weeks)
start work at 9am,
carry out ‘other work’ until 1pm, (4hrs)
‘drive’ until 3pm (digi tacho) (2hrs)
carry out ‘other work’ until 5pm(2hrs)
Also, what is the ‘rest’ requirement on the above working day pattern?
As you come no-where near 4.5 hours of driving for that day then you can forget about the required TACHO breaks for driving.
Now we go onto the WORKING TIME breaks under the mobile workers RT(WTD)Regs -
9am to 5pm is over 6 hours but under 9 hours so the TOTAL breaks for that must be 30 mins which can be in 2 X 15 mins.
You cannot go more than 6 hours without taking a 15 min break
You cannot have any break right at the end of the shift (must do some other work after a break)
At 3pm you reached that 6 hour point so at or before then you must take a 15 min break
The other 15 min break could be taken with the first 15 mins or before the end of the shift but not right at the end of it.
What breaks did you take ■■?
ADD + EDIT - I maybe wrong but I assumed you meant what is the BREAK requirement and not the REST requirement during that shift

You cannot use a log book, it will have to be a chart or printout. The easiest way to record the first bit of other work is to make a manual entry for it when you insert the digi card and then when you insert the card the next day you could make one manual entry for the period between 1500 and 1700 on the previous day, when it asks you if 1500 was the end of your shift say no and enter the two hours then when it asks again say yes. Then make another another for that days 0900 to 1300 period, when it asks if 1300 was the start of the shift say no and scroll it back to 0900 and make the entry, or entries with the correct mode for what you were doing.
Just one question, I don’t see any break in there and there should be at least 30 minutes of break in total for that day.

At least 11 hours although you can reduce that to 9 if you have any of your three allowed between weekly rest periods still available.
Thanks ROG and Coffeholic, that information is most useful. You have answered all my questions and confirmed what I had been thinking.
Yes, i was meant to say ‘break’ and not ‘rest’. I did actually have a couple of breaks which totalled 30mins during the day but didn’t mention them as not to confuse my questions.
