Switched to Nights

Working days I was out the door every morning before my daughter and wife awake, most days I would be back after 19:30 which means daughter now in bed, zero time to see her in the week basically, plus nights away.

On nights I generally start 18:00/19:00 which means at least an hour or two with the daughter / wife every day, on short shifts maybe enough time for a hug in the morning as well

A no brainer if you ask me

Night work is ok for single guys who live on thier own.
After a while it will get you down.

Of all the guys on nights at our place I am the only one who is single. All the others are either married or in long term, 15+ year, relationships.

Its for people in 15 year relationships as well to be fair.

bigvern1:
Spelling it right these days Nelson! :sunglasses:

Spelling what right?

Indeed, but I meant happy 15 year relationships. :stuck_out_tongue:

If I didn’t have commitments that tied in with my day shift rota, I’d be on nights pronto.
Driving standards in the UK nowadays are bloody poor, so the quieter the roads are the better.

I can’t see how night shifts can possibly benefit a long term relationship.

You climb into bed, amorous and full of energy at 6am, and they are tired and ■■■■■■ off at having been woken up prematurely.

They then go off to work and you don’t see them again until the evening when they are tired and ■■■■■■ off having worked a full day and you haven’t.

Unless you have been together so long that ■■■ has long become boring, and kids are on the scene, then I can’t see how night shifts can work for a couple unless you dislike the company of each other, or are entirely motivated by the ambition of retirement.

Of all the benefits of working nights, the only thing i miss is climbing into bed next to something warm.

Get a cat, works for me

What if your wife either doesn’t work, and lives around your shift patterns, or works in the transport industry on the other side of the desk - same shifts again. :sunglasses:

I’d argue the trick is to get married to someone sympathetic to the industry, very likely IN the industry, rather than a pole dancer who’s always got that constant temptation of punters throwing money at them all the time, as if to lure them away from you! :unamused:

My kid also thinks it’s cool to say at school “My dad’s a truck driver” instead of “my dad wears a suit and takes money off other people when they don’t want to part with it” or even “My dad just got this 4x4 on incapacity benefits” :imp:

One of these days I’m going to hear “My dad got killed on the M5”, and it’s going to break my heart.

No, not my kid you muppet! - I don’t have a Ouija board link to the school playground FFS!

P-E-R-R-Y-B-A-R-R!

P-E-R-R-Y-B-A-R-R!

So I did, I hadn’t even noticed and may I assure you it was more by accident than design. :stuck_out_tongue:

As I suspected!

The Vosa lot also tend to sit on the bridge Junction 18 M6 at night to ■■■■■■ the chosen ones to a place just down the road.

Being going into Palletways at Lichfield for 2 weeks now, and it is chaotic every night. They need to do what Palletforce did, and build a purpose built warehouse because these old hangers are no good for 12000 pallets every night.Palletforce works like clockwork.

I keep looking at DHL whitwood or Morley vacancies and UK Mail but never see them advertise. What are their rates on night trunking?

I wouldnt quite say clockwork and i wouldnt say its purpose built either. After coming to PF for over 18 months initially it seemed bright and shiny and good but after that time you realise its just a big warehouse with 3 seperate sections.
I dont hear of any of the pallet distribution places being the cleverest however theyre are still in business and pay my wages so i dont complain.

I prefer nights as well. Its the same run all the time so I look forward to roads being closed and diversions.(I definately sound like a nut job now!) No need to book time off work for the dentists or shizzle like that. Plus if i pull my finger out and get up here early ive had up to 6 hrs kip at work
It is a bit crap for a social life with my mates but they’ve learnt now that my only nights free are sat n sun.
To be honest I dont think you will ever find a job in haulage that doesnt muck up your social life at all. Just have to accept the pro’s n con’s(that is Unless you make the job your social life) lol :lol::grin::slight_smile:

I recall PW at fradley park/lichfield (think it was the same place?!) which involved a stop-start 3-4 hour tip queue when I did a drive for Shakespeare once upon a time.

I was the only one there that appeared to be English, along with one other rab-c-nesbit lookalike & soundalike driver alongside. All the FT team were polish, the manager was polish, and there wasn’t anyone else you could throw things up to. The whole system there seemed out of touch what, with it’s crappy old hanger thing that looked like a leftover outhouse from Auschwitz
 :smiling_imp:

Fast forward to some later runs I did for Palletforce - The tip queue seemed similar to start with, but it was going through in 90 mins instead of 3-4 hours. Ok

Burton seemed straight forward enough, although they didn’t like hunting for me around the yard, as I’d always park in the darkest corner, and try and get some sleep!

Watford Gap was a lot smoother, but you didn’t seem to get so long at a turnaround there. :frowning:

FT drivers would either be going “Och Aye a noo” whilst thrusting that winning post thing they use at you, or some polish guy would politely ask you “ProszÄℱ umieÅâ€șcić tutaj klawisze” for some reason thinking I looked polish amongst all these other hairy arsed guys tipping from all over the country
I think I was driving for Prospects last time I was up there. I’ve seen Wyvern & Knights of Old at all three locations, but that’s probably just because they have catchy names & wagons. You don’t remember the OD firm called “Smith @ Sons” do you? Smithy needs his cab lit up like a christmas tree with frilly curtains before it looks flash enough to catch our attention eh? :astonished:

I liked the old bill ceiling lights that was your queue to move on out - but only saw that at Watford Gap so far. They’d give you this sign “First Visit” or something similar, which some might think is like wearing a “C
t” label, but I found if I kept playing the “I’m a virgin” card each time I went, a few weeks apart, I’d get treated better - like have a FT driver with a regional accent I can understand come and gently wake me up with a gentle knock on my cab door at 3.30am
 :sunglasses:

Overall, I wouldn’t say either actually rocks, but they have a system that seems to work.
Palletways on the other hand, are the firm that throws a pile of loose change into your lap when you decide to have a ride at their establishment
Maybe some guy with a cowboy neckerchief will climb up on your wagon and tug at the ariel as if to disconnect it from the overhead power supply

Better not do that at Watford Gap though, not with those high-speed trains running right next to you whilst you open your curtains!

Don’t be one of the many assclowns who pull out of palletways entrance-way without looking while you are happily barreling along. It’s happening so often now that i’m ready for them. But it’s just not cricket.

Maybe one of these days one of them will get collected by the guy who decides not to stop, and realise the error of their ways.

Biggest problem with Lichfield is the altitude. It’s an old airfield, so fighting with double decker curtains in the gales that blow most nights, turns that air rather interesting shades of blue. Not to mention your forehead if you happen to catch a pole with it.

Oh, and if it’s your first visit, be sure to run those bollards over as you leave and take the turn over the bridge for the Southbound A38. They put shiny new ones out every week. They love it they do, they love it.

A38? - Yes, Lichfield and Fradley park ARE the same place then! It was about 8 years ago.

Burton PF, if I recall, is right up the other end of the A38 on the outskirts of burton itself. Big place, but much better run than PW.

bubsy06:
Much better at night, you can pull into a layby and have a ■■■ without having to find somewhere to hide, also its easier to drive on the right and pretend you are in france.

Lmfao

The Palletforce Hub is purpose built, their website confirms this.It is one massive warehouse with 3 entrances and exits, and nothing more. That is all a Pallet Hub needs, it is so simple and straightforward.

I remember PF been at Fradley Park in the hangars, so hopefully Palletways will follow suit and move to a newly built site, or maybe it will take a fatal accident for them to realise that Fradley Park is not fit for purpose.I was there Wednesday night and 20,000 pallets went through that night, i left at 6:15 am and some trailers were still being tipped. At around midnight, lorries were backed up and at a standstill on the A38, waiting to get into Palletways.
